Psalm 86:2 - Are Christians Holy?
Psa 86:2 (KJV) Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God,
save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
Psa 86:2 (NIV) Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are
my God; save your servant who trusts in you.
Psa 86:2 (TEV) Save me from death, because I am loyal to you;
save me, for I am your servant and I trust in you.
I am holy--better, "devoted" (NIV), meaning that the psalmist is
faithful or loyal to his relationship with God (Pss. 4:3; 85:8).
[Jamieson, Fausset, And Brown Commentary]
One of several Hebrew words for God's people, referring to them
as people who are or should be devoted to God and faithful to him.
[NIV SB]
"Thou art my God, to whom I have devoted myself, and on whom I
depend, and I am thy servant (v. 2), in subjection to thee, (Matthew
Henry's Commentary)
The Holy Spirit is the agent of holiness for the church and its
leaders (Acts 1:8; 2:4; 5:32; 13:2-4). He keeps the church pure (Acts
5:1-11). He promotes holiness in its members (1 Cor. 6:19; 1 Thess. 4:7).
Christians are called to holy living (1 Cor. 1:2; 3:17). They are saints
who lead godly, righteous lives. Being sanctified, or made holy, is
a work of the Holy Spirit on the basis of Christ's atonement that
calls for obedient submission from those who have been saved.
Christians are holy because of their calling in Christ, because of His
atonement for their sins, and because of the continual ministrations of
the Holy Spirit. They are holy inasmuch as they receive and submit
to these saving and sanctifying agents. John D. W. Watts [Holman's
Bible Dictionary]
He is holy: When a person has accepted Christ into their lives
and is following the leading of the Holy Spirit he is holy because
he is the temple of the Holy Spirit and living for Christ and God's
glory. [Gibbs]
He is holy: A devotion and dependence upon God that manifests
His character to those about us in the things we do. [Gibbs]
He does not say this in pride and vain glory, but with humble
thankfulness to God. (Matthew Henry's Commentary)
Those that are holy must nevertheless not trust in themselves,
nor in their own righteousness, but only in God and his grace. Those
that trust in God may expect salvation from him. (Matthew Henry's
Commentary)
Psa 86:2 (CWB) Please keep my heart for you, for I can't, even
though I am devoted to you. Save me, Lord, your servant who trusts
you.
Psalm 86 teaches us what's important about the person who prays.
He or she is to *come empty, as one who is poor and needy; *come
committed, as one who is devoted to God; *come confidently, as one who
trusts in God; *come, calling constantly. When this kind of person
lifts up his or her soul to the Lord, God hears. [Victor Bible
Reader's Companion]
