Psa 25:9 (KJV) The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek
will he teach his way.
Psa 25:9 (TEV) He leads the humble in the right way and teaches
them his will.
Psa 25:9 (TLB) he will teach the ways that are right and best
to those who humbly turn to him.
Meek/Humble: Those who acknowledge that they are without
resources. [NIV SB]
Meek/Humble: Those who are teachable, willing to learn. Humility
is the first rung of the ladder of Christian growth (see Matt.
18:3). [SDA Commentary]
The meek are guided by the Lord, because they are teachable,
willing to be instructed. They have a sincere desire to know and to do
the will of God.... He cannot lead those who are too proud to be
taught, who are bent upon having their own way. Of the double-minded
man--he who seeks to follow his own will, while professing to do the
will of God--it is written, "Let not that man think that he shall
receive anything of the Lord." James 1:7. PP384
The humble, the teachable, the prayerful, the gentle of spirit--
those who are willing to learn. A proud person who supposes that he
already knows enough CANNOT be taught; a haughty person who has no
respect for others, CANNOT learn of them; a person who is willing to
believe nothing CANNOT be instructed. The first requisite, therefore, in
the work of religion, as in respect to all kinds of knowledge, is a
meek and docile spirit. (Barnes' Notes)
The meek will he guide, the meek will he teach, that is, those
that are humble and low in their own eyes, that are distrustful of
themselves, desirous to be taught, and honestly resolved to follow the
divine guidance. Speak, Lord, for thy servant hears. These he will
guide in judgment, that is, by the rule of the written word; he will
guide them in that which is practical, which relates to sin and duty,
so that they may keep conscience void of offence; (Matthew Henry's
Commentary)
Those that are humble, that distrust themselves, and desire to
be taught and to follow Divine guidance, these he will guide in
judgment, that is, by the rule of the written word, to find rest for their
souls in the Saviour. [Matthew Henry Commentary]
When they see themselves sinners, and desire teaching, then he
will teach them the way of reconciliation to God, the way to a
well-grounded peace of conscience, and the way to eternal life. He does, by
his gospel, make this way known to all, and, by his Spirit, open the
understanding and guide penitent sinners that enquire after it. (Matthew
Henry's Commentary)
The repetition of "the meek" implies emphatically who alone are
the "sinners" <Ps. 25:8> whom God saves-- namely, those humbled and
saddened on account of their sins. `He guides them in judgment' or
`righteousness, ' justifying them in the face of their enemies-- both Satan,
their invisible adversary, and all who visibly oppose them <Zech.
3:1-5>. `He teaches them His way; ' the way whereby He orders their
deliverance from their enemies <Ps. 25:4; Jer. 10:23; Acts 8:31; 1 Cor.
10:13>. (Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary)
We need to let God change us, yet we cannot expect him to work
his transformation in our life if we are still proud and unwilling
to admit that we are helpless apart from him. The first step in
recovery is admitting that we are powerless over our dependencies. Only
after we do this can we experience God's healing work in our life.
[Life Recovery SB]
Sinners need instruction because of their continual bent against
God's way, and their need for confidence in God's mercy and continued
faithfulness to his covenant. [Jamieson, Fausset, And Brown Commentary]
Impressions alone are not a safe guide to duty. The enemy often
persuades men to believe that it is God who is guiding them, when in
reality they are following only human impulse. But if we watch
carefully, and take counsel with our brethren, we shall be given an
understanding of the Lord's will; AA279
Men who move in accordance with their own strong traits of
character, refusing to yoke up with others who have had a long experience
in the work of God, will become blinded by self-confidence, unable
to discern between the false and the true. AA279
The "methods" by which God teaches are:
(1) By His word or law,
(2) by His Spirit,
(3) by His providence,
(4) by the advice and counsel of those who have experience--
(Barnes' Notes)
Because of his justice, righteousness, loving-kindness, and
truth, he will guide and teach men in these same paths. [Wycliffe Bible
Commentary]
To fear the Lord is to recognize him for who he is: holy,
righteous, all-knowing, all-powerful, and full of wiedom. The better we
know God, the better we see ourselves for who we are: sinful, weak,
frail, and needy. When you recognize God for who he is and yourself for
who you are, you will want to cling to him in total dependence. This
is the starting point for learning how to choose his ways, which
always results in the best decisions. [Small Group SB]
God will not give what we are too proud to receive. Pride is
like a barrier that blocks out the very things God desires to do in
our lives. [Quest SB]
"Not my way, but Thine, O Lord!" must be the prayer of the
humble follower of God. [SDA Commentary]
