2 Corinthians 10:17 - Boasting the Right Way!
2Cor.10:17; Boasting the Right Way!
2 Cor 10:17 (KJV) But he that glorieth, let him glory in the
Lord.
2 Cor 10:17 (NIV) But, "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
2 Cor 10:17 (TLB) As the Scriptures say, "If anyone is going to
boast, let him boast about what the Lord has done and not about
himself."
Paul quoted Jeremiah 9:24 to reinforce this idea. [New Bible
Companion]
The credit for success, whether in personal Christian experience
or in ministry for others, belongs to God. To arrogate to oneself
honor for success is to dishonor God by turning men's eyes from Him to
the human instrument, and to exalt man above God. Those who become
satisfied with themselves fall short of the Christian ideal Those who keep
in constant fellowship with Christ never have an exalted opinion of
themselves. [SDA Commentary]
An elephant and a flea, they say,
Crossed over a bridge one day.
To the elephant said the flea:
"We shook that one didn't we!"
Ridiculous? Of course. But no more ridiculous than when you
boast of things you have done--and leave God out of the picture.
The Bible abounds with imagery of the believer's dependence upon
God's strength and faithfulness:
* You are clay in the Potter's hands (Jeremiah 18:6).
* You are a branch abiding in the Vine (John 15:5).
* You are a member of Christ's body, of which He is the Head
(Romans 12:4-5; Ephesians 1:22-23).
That's not to say boasting is inappropriate in the Christian
life. In 2 Corinthians, perhaps Paul's most personal letter, he uses
the word boast a total of 13 times. But notice who and what Paul was
boasting about! "He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord" (10:17).
Take Paul's advice right now! In a note, phone call, or visit,
share with one other person today the greatness of your God. It might
be just the encouragement that person needs to trust in Him also
