COMMENTARY / APPLICATION
Overview
God sent Samuel to the house of Jesse, where the old prophet
anointed David to become Israel's future king (16:1-13). David entered
Saul's service as a musician (vv. 14-23). When the Philistines
assembled to attack Israel, only David was willing to face their champion,
the giant Goliath (17:1-37). In history's most famous duel, young
David killed Goliath with his sling (vv. 38-58). [The 365-Day

"I come against you in the name of the LORD" 1 Sam. 17:38-54. We
all know the outcome of that battle. With a single stone hurled from
his sling David killed Goliath, serving ever since as the prime
example of faith overcoming impossible odds. [The 365-Day Devotional

The first error of David was his distrust of God... his second
mistake was his deception... Yet this experience was serving to teach
David wisdom; for it led him to realize his weakness and the necessity
of constant dependence upon God. Oh, how precious is the sweet
influence of the Spirit of God as it comes to depressed or despairing
souls, encouraging the fainthearted, strengthening the feeble, and
imparting courage and help to the tried servants of the Lord! Oh, what a
God is ours, who deals gently with the erring and manifests His
patience and tenderness in adversity, and when we are overwhelmed with

When shadows encompass the soul, when we want light and
guidance, we must look up; there is light beyond the darkness. David ought
not to have distrusted God for one moment. He had cause for trusting
in Him:.. if he had but removed his mind from the distressing
situation in which he was placed, and had thought of God's power and
majesty, he would have been at peace even in the midst of the shadows of
death; he could with confidence have repeated the promise of the Lord,

Every failure on the part of the children of God is due to their
lack of faith. {PP 657}
Thou comest ... I come. Here is a definite contrast between two
distinct ways of life. Goliath represents the carnal security of personal
strength, the pride of self-aggrandizement, the vanity of popular acclaim,
the untamable fierceness of human passion. David manifests quiet
trust in divine strength and the determination to glorify God by
carrying out His will. David's motive, expressed here and later in his
life, was not to have his own way, nor to become famous in the eyes of
his fellow men, but "that all the earth may know that there is a
God. [SDA Commentary]
We must look at circumstances from God's perspective. What a
difference perspective can make. Most of the onlookers saw only a giant.
David, however, saw a mortal man defying almighty God. He knew he would
not be alone when he faced Goliath; God would fight with him. He
looked at his situation from God's point of view. Viewing impossible
situations from God's point of view helps us put giant problems in
perspective. Once we see clearly, we can fight more effectively. [Life

Criticism couldn't stop David. While the rest of the army stood
around, he knew the importance of taking action. With God to fight for
him, there was no reason to wait. People may try to discourage you
with negative comments or mockery, but continue to do what you know
is right. By doing what is right, you will be pleasing God, whose
opinion matters most. [Life Application SB]
"I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of
the armies of Israel" (1 Sam. 17:45).
When the obstacles we face seem overwhelming, it helps to
remember the young shepherd boy, David, whose faith gave him courage to

Giant Killers (1 Sam. 17)
There have been too many sermons on the subject to belabor the
point. The odds seemed impossible when David went out to meet Goliath.
Yet, with faith in God and a simple shepherd's sling, David won.
Everyone has times when he or she faces a personal Goliath in
some situation in which the odds seem impossible. A challenge that no
one else is willing to take up. A struggle it seems impossible to
win. When that happens, we, like David, have nowhere to turn but to
God. We are to remember that we too can meet that personal giant in
the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of hosts.
It was in God's name that David killed Goliath. It is with God's
help that Christians through the ages have faced similar impossible

JESUS CARES
When your heart is heavy and burdened
And you can't see your way through,
While you're going through trials and testings
And you don't know what to do.
