COMMENTARY / APPLICATION

Wealth gained without real effort is soon dissipated. What a man
has toiled to earn he will usually spend with care, and, gradually,
he will build up a reserve. [SDA Commentary]

Hastily acquired wealth usually comes through dishonest
dealings. [Ryrie SB re Pro.28:20]

The way to become richly blessed is by being faithful
("trustworthy"), not by using get-rich-quick schemes. Being eager to get rich
often leads to devious, dishonest ways (cf. 13:11; 20:21) resulting in
the person being punished either by the courts or by poverty or both
(cf. 28:22). Others who will not go unpunished are referred to in
6:29; 11:21; 16:5; 17:5; 19:5, 9. [Bible Knowledge Commentary re
Pro.28:20]

Luke 12:15 (NIV) Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your
guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the
abundance of his possessions."

Eccles. 12:13 (NIV) Now all has been heard; here is the
conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is
the whole duty of man.

How many a man might have escaped financial failure and ruin by
heeding the warnings, so often repeated and emphasized in the
Scriptures:  {Ed 136.5}
