COMMENTARY / APPLICATION
Those whose strength is in you.: Those who have come to know the
Lord as their deliverer and the sustainer of their lives. [NIV SB]
84:5-7 The phrase whose heart is set on pilgrimage refers those
who make their way to the temple not out of obligation, but out of a
wellspring of joy. The Valley of Baca, or "Valley of Weeping," refers to
the various difficulties that one might face on a pilgrimage. The
person on a pilgrimage might discover that the once-dark valley is
filled with springs, rain, and pools--all signs of God's blessing.
strength to strength: As one nears the temple, the rigors of the journey
become tolerable, for the joy of the approaching arrival strengthens
the soul. [Nelson SB]
84:5-7 The pilgrimage to the temple passed through the barren
Valley of Baca. No specific valley has been identified with Baca.
Because 'Baca' can mean "weeping," it may have been a symbolic reference
to the times of struggles and tears through which people must pass
on their way to meet God. Growing strong in God's presence is often
preceded by a journey through barren places in our lives. The person who
loves to spend time with God will see his or her adversity as an
opportunity to re-experience God's faithfulness. If you are walking through
your own Valley of Baca today, be sure your pilgrimage leads toward
God, not away from him. [Life Application SB]
No other joy can be compared with the joy of His presence.
Prayer seeks fellowship with God and provides that fellowship even when
we are far removed from the house of worship.[Disciple SB]
Those who have the new Jerusalem in their eye must have the ways
that lead to it in their heart, must mind them, their eyes must look
straight forward in them, must ponder the paths of them, must keep close
to them, and be afraid of turning aside to the right hand or to the
left. If we make God's promise our strength, we must make God's word
our rule, and walk by it.... The ordinances of God are the believer's
solace in this evil world; in them he enjoys the presence of the living
God: this causes him to regret his absence from them. They are to his
soul as the nest to the bird. Yet they are only an earnest of the
happiness of heaven; [Matthew Henry Commentary]
Those are truly happy who go forth, and go on, in the exercises
of religion, not in their own strength (for then the work is sure
to miscarry), but in the strength of the grace of Jesus Christ,
from whom all our sufficiency is. The pilgrims to the heavenly city
may have to pass through many a valley of weeping, and many a
thirsty desert; but wells of salvation shall be opened for them, and
consolations sent for their support. Those that press forward in their
Christian course, shall find God add grace to their graces. And those who
grow in grace, shall be perfect in glory. [Matthew Henry Commentary]
