Matthew 11:28-30 - THE GOSPEL CALL - part 2
MAT.11:28-30; THE GOSPEL CALL - part 2
"COME TO ME,
ALL YOU WHO ARE WEARY AND BURDENED,
AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST.
TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU AND LEARN FROM ME,
FOR I AM GENTLE AND HUMBLE IN HEART,
AND YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.
FOR MY YOKE IS EASY AND MY BURDEN IS LIGHT."
Mat 11:28-30 (NIV)
INTRODUCTION
"I have read in Plato and Cicero sayings that are wise and very
beautiful; but I never read in either of them: 'Come unto Me all ye that
labour and are heavy laden.'" St. Augustine [The 365-Day Devotional
Commentary]
Through the ages these verses have been among the most beloved
in the NT. [Ryrie SB]
Only in Matthew is this invitation [Cambridge Annotated SB]
This is the gospel call; whoever will, let him come. [Matthew
Henry Commentary]
This great invitation, extended to all, is threefold: (1) to
come and receive salvation; (2) to learn in discipleship; and (3) to
serve in yoke with the Lord. [Ryrie SB]
LEARN FROM ME; I AM GENTLE AND HUMBLE IN HEART
Jesus said, "Learn from Me." Jesus, their leader and example,
was also the ultimate servant, gentle and lowly in heart. His path
of humble service is the pattern for us to follow. So much of our
fatigue and burdensome toil stems from pride. If we are successful, our
egos are inflated and we try for more. If we falter, the rejection of
others and our self-condemnation weigh us down in guilt and self-doubt.
It is much more freeing to take Christ's attitude of serving
others. (Life Application Commentary)
Human nature is ever struggling for expression, ready for
contest; but he who learns of Christ is emptied of self, of pride, of
love of supremacy, and there is silence in the soul. Self is yielded
to the disposal of the Holy Spirit. Then we are not anxious to have
the highest place. We have no ambition to crowd and elbow ourselves
into notice; but we feel that our highest place is at the feet of our
Saviour. We look to Jesus, waiting for His hand to lead, listening for
His voice to guide.... When we receive Christ as an abiding guest in
the soul, the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, will
keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. MB14-16
Every day I have the honor of sitting down with a book that
contains the words of the One who created me. Every day I have the
opportunity to let him give me a thought or two on how to live. If I don't
do what he says, he doesn't burn the book or cancel my
subscription. If I disagree with what he says, lightning doesn't split my
swivel chair or an angel doesn't mark my name off the holy list. If I
don't understand what he says, he doesn't call me a dummy. In fact, he
calls me "Son," and on a different page explains what I don't
understand. In the Eye of the Storm by Max Lucado [Inspirational SB re Acts
20:32]
Read it through, pray it in, live it out, pass it on. George
