Text and Translations

Revelation 19:7 (KJV) Let us be glad and rejoice, and give
honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath

Revelation 19:7 (NLT) Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us
give honor to him. For the time has come for the wedding feast of the
Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself.

WORD STUDY

Honour. Literally, "glory." This is the climatic expression of
gratitude and devotion. [SDA Commentary]

Wedding of the Lamb. The imagery of a wedding to express the
intimate relationship between God and his people [NIV SB]

OVERVIEW: TWO CONTRASTING SUPPERS

Two contrasting suppers are named in this chapter: the marriage
supper of the Lamb (vv. 7-10), which brings blessing, and the "supper
of the great God" (vv. 17-21), which brings judgment. The bride
makes herself ready at the judgment seat of Christ where her "spots
and wrinkles" are taken away (Eph. 5:25-27) and she receives rewards
for faithful service. In contrast, the godless armies of earth are
defeated by the Lord and become food for the birds. This is the battle of
Armageddon mentioned in Revelation 18:18. [Chapter by Chapter Bible
Commentary by Warren Wiersbe]

APPLICATION COMMENTARY: THE WEDDING SUPPER OR MARRIAGE SUPPER OF
THE LAMB.

The figure of marriage is used in both Testaments to describe
God's relation to His people (Hos 2:19-21; Eph 5:25-27). The
consummation of the church as the bride of Christ will involve the completion
of individual salvation and resultant corporate righteousness of
the body, the church. Eternal union with Christ is the church's
destiny and hope. [Disciple SB]

The wedding supper thus joyously marked the inauguration of the
rest of life: a life in which two who had been separate would now be
one. [The 365-Day Devotional Commentary]

"The marriage supper of the Lamb" is the consummation of the
marriage of Christ and the Church as His bride.

APPLICATION COMMENTARY: THE WEDDING GARMENT

The bride of the Lamb wears a garment of precious fine linen
that symbolizes the good works of believers. In other words, the
white garment signifies faithful obedience to God (see Matt. 22:11,
12). [Nelson SB]

By the wedding garment in the parable is represented the pure,
spotless character which Christ's true followers will possess. To the
church it is given "that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and
white," "not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing." Eph. 5:27. The
fine linen, says the Scripture, "is the righteousness of saints."
Rev. 19:8. It is the righteousness of Christ, His own unblemished
character, that through faith is imparted to all who receive Him as their
personal Saviour.... Only the covering which Christ Himself has provided
can make us meet to appear in God's presence. This covering, the
robe of His own righteousness, Christ will put upon every repenting,
believing soul..... When we submit ourselves to Christ, the heart is united
with His heart, the will is merged in His will, the mind becomes one
with His mind, the thoughts are brought into captivity to Him; we
live His life. This is what it means to be clothed with the garment
of His righteousness.... Righteousness is right doing, and it is by
their deeds that all will be judged. Our characters are revealed by
what we do. The works show whether the faith is genuine. COL310-312

Only those who are clothed in the garments of His righteousness
will be able to endure the glory of His presence when He shall appear
with "power and great glory." . SD368

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

It means much to be an overcomer. The besetments of the enemy
and all his evil agencies must be firmly resisted. Every moment we
must be on guard. Not for one instant are we to lose sight of Christ,
and of His power to save in the hour of trial. Our hand must be
placed in His, that we may be upheld by the power of His might. SD368

The church prepares for the wedding by witnessing, by right
living, and by those actions which please the Lamb. The church must
remain morally pure as it waits for the bridegroom's appearance.
