Psalm 25:9 - The Meek & Humble - God Will Teach & Guide.
Psa.25:9: The Meek & Humble - God Will Teach & Guide.
Psa 25:9 (KJV) The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek
will he teach his way.
Psa 25:9 (NIV) He guides the humble in what is right and
teaches them his way.
Psa 25:9 (TEV) He leads the humble in the right way and teaches
them his will.
Psa 25:9 (Gibbs) God will teach and guide the humble in His
will and ways.
Meek/Humble: Those who are teachable, willing to learn. Humility
is the first rung of the ladder of Christian growth (see Matt.
18:3). [SDA Commentary]
God will not give what we are too proud to receive. Pride is
like a barrier that blocks out the very things God desires to do in
our lives. [Quest SB]
The meek are guided by the Lord, because they are teachable,
willing to be instructed. They have a sincere desire to know and to do
the will of God.... He cannot lead those who are too proud to be
taught, who are bent upon having their own way. Of the double-minded
man--he who seeks to follow his own will, while professing to do the
will of God--it is written, "Let not that man think that he shall
receive anything of the Lord." James 1:7. PP384
The humble, the teachable, the prayerful, the gentle of spirit--
those who are willing to learn. A proud person who supposes that he
already knows enough CANNOT be taught; a haughty person who has no
respect for others, CANNOT learn of them; a person who is willing to
believe nothing CANNOT be instructed. The first requisite, therefore, in
the work of religion, as in respect to all kinds of knowledge, is a
meek and docile spirit. (Barnes' Notes)
The meek will he guide, the meek will he teach, that is, those
that are humble and low in their own eyes, that are distrustful of
themselves, desirous to be taught, and honestly resolved to follow the
divine guidance. Speak, Lord, for thy servant hears. These he will
guide in judgment, that is, by the rule of the written word; to find
rest for their souls in the Saviour. [Matthew Henry Commentary]
We need to let God change us, yet we cannot expect him to work
his transformation in our life if we are still proud and unwilling
to admit that we are helpless apart from him. The first step in
recovery is admitting that we are powerless over our dependencies. Only
after we do this can we experience God's healing work in our life.
[Life Recovery SB]
Sinners need instruction because of their continual bent against
God's way, and their need for confidence in God's mercy and continued
faithfulness to his covenant. [Jamieson, Fausset, And Brown Commentary]
To fear the Lord is to recognize him for who he is: holy,
righteous, all-knowing, all-powerful, and full of wisdom. The better we
know God, the better we see ourselves for who we are: sinful, weak,
frail, and needy. When you recognize God for who he is and yourself for
who you are, you will want to cling to him in total dependence. This
is the starting point for learning how to choose his ways, which
always results in the best decisions. [Small Group SB]
The "methods" by which God teaches are:
(1) By His word or law,
(2) by His Spirit,
(3) by His providence,
(4) by the advice and counsel of those who have experience--
(Barnes' Notes)
James 4:6-10 (AMP) He gives us more and more grace ( power of
the Holy Spirit, to meet this evil tendency and all others fully).
That is why He says, God sets Himself against the proud and haughty,
but gives grace [continually] to the lowly (those who are humble
enough to receive it). [Prov 3:34.] So be subject to God. Resist the
devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you. Come close
to God and He will come close to you. [Recognize that you are]
sinners, get your soiled hands clean; [realize that you have been
disloyal] wavering individuals with divided interests, and purify your
hearts [of your spiritual adultery]. [As you draw near to God] be
deeply penitent and grieve, even weep [over your disloyalty]. Let your
laughter be turned to grief and your mirth to dejection and heartfelt
shame [for your sins]. Humble yourselves [feeling very insignificant]
in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you [He will lift
you up and make your lives significant].
James 4:6-10 (TMNT) And what he gives in love is far better than
anything else you'll find. It's common knowledge that "God goes against
the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble." So let
God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him
scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he'll be there in no time. Quit
dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit
bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious,
really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it's the only
way you'll get on your feet.
"Not my way, but Thine, O Lord!" must be the prayer of the
humble follower of God. [SDA Commentary]
