COMMENTARY APPLICATION
As I hung up the phone, fear crept over me like a dark cloud.
The doctors at UCLA had finally called with a date for my daughter's
open-heart surgery. At five, Ashley had already survived two operations. I
wasn't sure either of us was ready for another one.
The next morning, as I entered my classroom full of fourth
graders, I noticed a card on my desk from one of my room mothers. In bold
letters on the front I read Isaiah 41:10. The words spoke comfort to my
soul. On the way home I turned on the radio just in time to hear the
speaker quoting Isaiah 41:10. There it was again.
That night I called home, three thousand miles away, and
poured out my doubt and fear to my stepmom.
"Honey, I want to read you what the pastor shared last
Sunday," she offered in her soft southern drawl. As she read the words
from Isaiah 41:10, I wept, knowing that God had gone to a great deal
of trouble to let me know he was there for my daughter and me--now
and forever.
