1 Corinthians 8:1b - Knowledge Puffs Up, But Love Builds Up.

1 Corinthians 8:1b - Knowledge Puffs Up, But Love Builds Up.

1 Corinthians 8:1b (NIV) We know that we all possess knowledge.
Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

This is "love" in its highest form, not sensual or biological
attraction, but love based on principle; love as a real interest in one's
fellow man because of his value to God as a being for whom Christ died.
Such love "is not puffed up". It builds up rather than tears down;
therefore it seeks constantly to do those things that will help others.
Knowledge alone is insufficient ground for Christian action.... it is not
safe to rely on such a faulty guide as human wisdom. If the heart is
not rightly related to God, knowledge or science alone fills a man
with pride and swells him with vain confidence in his own powers. It
often leads him away from genuine religion and confuses his mind (see
ch. 1:20, 21). [SDA Bible Commentary]

Love is more important than knowledge. Knowledge can make us
look good and feel important, but we can all too easily develop an
arrogant, know-it-all attitude. Many people with strong opinions are
unwilling to listen to and learn from God and others. We can obtain God's
knowledge only by loving him (see James 3:17, 18). And we can know and be
known by God only when we model him by showing love (1 John 4:7, 8).
[Life Application SB]

Love is more important than knowledge. Knowledge can make us
look good and feel in control, but knowledge centers on us instead of
on God and others. Love, on the other hand, looks beyond ourselves
to the interests of others (Philippians 2:4). [One Year NLT SB]

The "know-it-all" attitude is selfish, while love aims to please
others. It is not enough merely to ask whether or not something is
permissible. Love goes on to consider, "Is it helpful and best for others?"
(See 10:23, 24; Rom. 14:15.) [Jamieson, Fausset, And Brown
Commentary]

Knowledge must be balanced by love. Your spiritual knowledge can
be either a weapon to hurt people or a tool to build people. If
your knowledge puffs you up, it will tear others down. Love knows
when and how to yield to others without compromising the truth.
Review Romans 14-15. [Chapter by Chapter Bible Commentary by Warren
Wiersbe]

God wants us to keep learning about Him and His ways, not merely
to add to our storehouse of knowledge, but to better serve Him and
His people. Knowledge plus love equals a powerful team! [Life
Principles SB By Charles Stanley]
