1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 - How Is Your Temple?
1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 - How Is Your Temple?
1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 (KJV) What? know ye not that your body is
the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God,
and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price:
therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 (NIV) Do you not know that your body is a
temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from
God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore
honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 (NLT) Don't you realize that your body is
the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you
by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a
high price. So you must honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 (CWR) Do you realize that when you became
a Christian, your body became a temple for the Holy Spirit to live
in? His presence in you is a gift to you from God! So your body
belongs to Him. 20 You've been bought with a price. Therefore, honor God
with your bodies.
All men have been bought with this infinite price. By pouring
the whole treasury of heaven into this world, by giving us in Christ
all heaven, God has purchased the will, the affections, the mind,
the soul, of every human being. Whether believers or unbelievers,
all men are the Lord's property. COL326 [Remnant SB]
God laid down the entire payment - the life of His only Son - to
pay for the freedom of every man, woman, boy, and girl who ever has
lived, and ever will live, on earth. In any normal transaction, this
purchase would be complete. But God knew the relationship He desires with
humans wouldn't be real love unless we willingly accept the gift He
offers. Only when we surrender ourselves to God is the transaction
complete. [The 365 Daily Promise Bible By Barbour]
God made your body and gave it to you. As Psalm 139:13 says,
"you knit me together in my mother's womb." He then bought you out of
slavery to sin at the price of Jesus' shed blood on the cross. He bought
all of you: body, soul, and spirit. So he is the owner of your body,
and you are the manager of it, caring for it and putting it to work
on his behalf. Your body is a priceless gift on loan to you, to be
used for his glory.
Therefore, God calls you to treat your body with respect. It
is holy to God, and he trusts you to care for it. What do you plan
to do with your body today? What will you feed it? How will you
care for it so that it works well for many years? What exercise does
it need? How much sleep? What work would honor him? Your body is a
tremendous gift that God lends to you so that you can use it for his glory.
[The Daniel Plan 365-Day Devotional]
Where does God dwell? We think of heavenly thrones with
crowds of angelic worshipers gathered round. Or of a long-ago
Tabernacle in the wilderness or Temple in Jerusalem. We may even think of
the right answer, but often only because we've been taught, not
because our experience has made it obvious. The Spirit of God lives
within those who believe in Him and have received Him.
Paul had to remind the Corinthians that the Spirit was within
them; apparently that wasn't obvious to some of them, either. Many of
them had worshiped the Jews' God, who had once visited a Tabernacle
and a Temple; many had worshiped in the Greek temples that honored
gods without expecting their presence. But the human body as a
residence for the divine Spirit? That wasn't expected.
Like many of us, the Corinthians had experienced the Spirit
at work - as One who utilized His people for service. But they
forgot the deeper truth that the Spirit lived in them constantly for
the purpose of relationship - that they might know God and be fully
known by Him. The Greek gods used their subjects but didn't
particularly enjoy them. The Hebrew God was different. He came to share life.
The awesome, majestic God of the universe chooses to make His
home deep in the depths of your being. You have likely sensed Him
often - perhaps without even knowing it was Him. Ask Him to teach you
which voice is His, which impulses are His, which dreams and desires
are given by Him. He resides there not primarily to use you but to
move you, empower you, and enjoy you.
Spirit, I know You're within me; please help me recognize
You. I want to know which thoughts and dreams are Yours. And I want
to enjoy You as You enjoy me. [The One Year Experiencing God's
Presence Devotional by Chris Tiegreen]
I am the Eternal I AM; I always have been, and I always will
be. In My Presence you experience Love and Light, Peace and Joy. I
am intimately involved in all your moments, and I am training you
to be aware of Me at all times. Your assignment is to collaborate
with Me in this training process.
I have taken up residence within you; I am central in your
innermost being. Your mind goes off in tangents from its holy Center, time
after time. Do not be alarmed by your inability to remain focused on
Me. Simply bring your thoughts gently back to Me each time they
wander. The quickest way to redirect your mind to me is to whisper My
Name. (Exodus 3:14; 1 Corinthians 3:16; Psalm 25:14-15) [Jesus Calling
by Sarah Young]
Take Time To Be Holy. The word holy does not mean
goody-goody; it means set apart for sacred use. That is what these quiet
moments in My Presence are accomplishing within you. As you focus your
mind and heart on Me, you are being transformed: re-created into the
one I designed you to be. This process requires blocks of time set
aside for communion with Me.
The benefits of this practice are limitless. Emotional and
physical healing are enhanced by your soaking in the Light of My
Presence. You experience a nearness to Me that strengthens your faith and
fills you with Peace. You open yourself up to receive the many
blessings that I have prepared for you. You become a cleansed temple of My
Holy Spirit, who is able to do in and through you immeasurably more
than you ask or imagine. These are just some of the benefits of being
still in My Presence. (2 Thes. 1:10; Psa. 27:4; 1 Cor. 6:19; Eph.
3:20) Jesus Calling by Sarah Young
Learn to listen to Me even while you are listening to other
people. As they open their souls to your scrutiny, you are on holy
ground. You need the help of My Spirit to respond appropriately. Ask Him
to think through you, live through you, love through you. My own
Being is alive within you in the Person of the Holy Spirit. If you
respond to others' needs through your unaided thought processes, you
offer them dry crumbs. When the Spirit empowers your listening and
speaking, My streams of living water flow through you to other people. Be
a channel of My Love, Joy, and Peace by listening to Me as you
listen to others. (Exo. 3:5; 1Co. 6:19; John 7:38, 39) [Jesus Calling
by Sarah Young]
