Psalm 91:1 - Dwelling in the Almighty

Psalm 91:1 - Dwelling in the Almighty

Psalm 91:1 (NIV) Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:1 (NLT) Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:1 (CWR) He who comes to the secret place of the Most
High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

INTRODUCTION

The theme of Psalm 91 is security: God preserves those who
abide in Him and love Him. These promises are not for people who run
to the Lord only in times of danger but for those who dwell in His
presence (v. 1) and make the Holy of Holies their habitation (v. 9)...
The abiding life (vv. 1-4) produces the assuring life (vv.
5-13), the life without fear, which leads to the abounding life (vv.
14-16), the life of victory and peace. [Chapter by Chapter Bible
Commentary by Warren Wiersbe]

COMMENTARY

We never have to be lonely, because God is always present
with us. To dwell in his shelter is to maintain conscious connection
with him throughout the day. We can maintain it by offering short
prayers, such as the name of Jesus or You are my refuge or I trust you,
Lord. We can also schedule short breaks in the day to meditate on him
- his goodness, his love, his faithfulness.
The psalmist says to God, "I am always with you; you hold me
by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you
will take me into glory" (Psalm 73:23, 24). God is always, always
there, close enough to hold us by the hand, eager to guide us,
promising to take us into glory. How amazing it is that right now you are
with him.
God is our refuge and fortress, the Friend who always stands
with us, and he longs for us to seek his presence. [The Daniel Plan
365-Day Devotional]

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Expect to encounter adversity in your life, remembering that
you live in a deeply fallen world. Stop trying to find a way that
circumvents difficulties. The main problem with an easy life is that it
masks your need for Me. When you became a Christian, I infused My very
Life into you, empowering you to live on a supernatural plane by
depending on Me.
   Anticipate coming face-to-face with impossibilities:
situations totally beyond your ability to handle. This awareness of your
inadequacy is not something you should try to evade. It is precisely where
I want you-the best place to encounter Me in My Glory and Power.
When you see armies of problems marching toward you, cry out to Me!
Allow Me to fight for you. Watch Me working on your behalf, as you
rest in the shadow of My Almighty Presence. (Rev. 19:1; Psa. 91:1)
[Jesus Calling by Sarah Young]

Come to Me, and rest in My loving Presence. You know that this
day will bring difficulties, and you are trying to think your way
through those trials. As you anticipate what is ahead of you, you forget
that I am with you - now and always. Rehearsing your troubles results
in experiencing them many times, whereas you are meant to go
through them only when they actually occur. Do not multiply your
suffering in this way! Instead, come to Me, and relax in My Peace. I will
strengthen you and prepare you for this day, transforming your fear into
confident trust. (Mat. 11:28-30; Jos. 1:5, 9) [Jesus Calling by Sarah
Young]

Come to Me and rest. I am all about you, to bless and
restore. Breathe Me in with each breath. The way just ahead of you is
very steep. Slow down and cling tightly to My hand. I am teaching you
a difficult lesson, learned only by hardship.
Lift up empty hands of faith to receive My precious Presence.
Light, Life, Joy, and Peace flow freely through this gift. When your
focus turns away from Me, you grasp for other things. You drop the
glowing gift of My Presence as you reach for lifeless ashes. Return to
Me; regain My Presence. (Mat. 11:28-29; 1 Tim. 2:8) [Jesus Calling
by Sarah Young]

I am the resurrection and the life; all lasting Life emanates
from Me. People search for life in many wrong ways: chasing after
fleeting pleasures, accumulating possessions and wealth, trying to deny
the inevitable effects of aging. Meanwhile, I freely offer abundant
Life to everyone who turns toward Me. As you come to Me and take My
yoke upon you, I fill you with My very Life. This is how I choose to
live in the world and accomplish My purposes. This is also how I
bless you with Joy unspeakable and full of Glory. The Joy is Mine, and
the Glory is Mine; but I bestow them on you as you live in My
Presence, inviting Me to live fully in you. (John 11:25; Mat. 11:28, 29;
1Pe. 1:8, 9) [Jesus Calling by Sarah Young]
