Matthew 6:11 - Give us this day our daily bread.
Matthew 6:11: Give us this day our daily bread.
When you pray the Lord's Prayer, do you ever stumble over the
words "give us each day our daily bread" (Luke 11:3)? Why should we
have to ask? God knows we need it. Why doesn't He just supply it? And
why ask every day? Why not ask for a whole week or month or year?
The answer is, God knows us better than we know ourselves. He has
determined we should feel and recognize our daily - even hourly -
dependence on Him. That way, we will have to go often to His throne for
help. We will be daily reminded that we are needy and that He
provides. That we are weak, and He is strong. That we are nothing without
Him and have everything through Him. Today's Scripture (Exo. 16:21)
tells us that "each morning everyone gathered as much [manna] as they
needed." A day's supply awaited them. But they had to get up in the
morning and gather it in!
Lord, how foolish of me to imagine I can slip into cruise
control and get by without coming into Your presence. I need fresh manna
from heaven. I need a fresh filling of Your Spirit. I need a new set
of directions from Your Word. I need a renewed sense that You are
with me today, this moment, right now. [A Spectacle of Glory by Joni
