Matthew 22:36-40: Loving God With All Your Heart, Soul And Mind.

Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV) "Teacher, which is the greatest 
commandment in the Law?"  Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all 
your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is 
the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: 
'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  All the Law and the Prophets hang 
on these two commandments." 

Matthew 22:36-40 (CWR) Teacher, which do you think is the 
most important commandment that God gave?  The lawyer was hoping 
to get Jesus to prioritize Gods laws, then challenge Him on His 
reasons for doing so.  But instead, Jesus summarized Gods laws. 
You should love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul 
and all your mind, said Jesus.  This is the first and most 
important commandment.  And the next one is just like it.  You should love 
and value your neighbor as much as you love and value yourself.  You 
see, the entire law rests on both these principles because theyre 
interrelated; you cant separate them. 

COMMENTARY PEARLS

God in Our Thoughts
   While studying about being closer to God, I was reminded 
today that He is only one thought away at all times. We can be with 
God anytime by simply thinking about Him. God wants as to think 
about Him, and His thoughts toward us are more than the grains of sand 
on all the beaches in the world (see Psalm 139:17-18). Those are a 
lot of thoughts! 
   It is in our minds that we live in conscious interaction with 
God. We can bring Him close at anytime by conversing with Him or 
thinking of Him. I sometimes stop what I am doing and simply think, God 
is here right now! Then I take a moment to realize what that means 
to me. God is with us, but if we never or rarely bring that into 
our conscious awareness, it is as if He were not there at all. 
   Some things to consider thinking about would be the last 
special thing you can remember that God did for you or all the blessings 
in your life. We can also think about His character. He is good, 
just, merciful, forgiving, long-suffering, patient, and wise, and He 
is actually a lot of fun to be with! God is your friend, so I 
recommend thinking of Him often and talking to Him about anything and 
everything! He is always interested in you and what you have to say! 
   Father, I want to live in and enjoy Your presence. Help me do 
so by talking to You all the time and thinking of You often. [My

What Life Is About
   "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your 
soul and with all your mind Love your neighbor as yourself." 
Matthew 22:37, 39 
   One day Jesus was walking down the street, and a man came up 
and asked, "Lord, what's life all about?" 
   Jesus told him life is all about love. It's not about 
accomplishment. It's not about acquisition. It's not about popularity, power, or 
prestige. It's about love. It's about relationships. You can summarize all 
of life in two phrases: love God with all your heart, and love your 
neighbor as yourself. This is called the Great Commandment: make the 
connection with God, and make the connection with others. If you don't have 
those two loves, then you miss the purpose of life. 
   Sometimes we get wrapped up in urgent things that have 
nothing to do with love. By contrast, our goal should be to build our 
lives on a foundation of love. As Mother Teresa said, "Do ordinary 
things with extraordinary love." How can you reach out in love today?  
   If you focus on love, you'll live a full life and influence
