Psalm 23:3 - How God Keeps You on Track.
Psalm 23:3 (NIV) He guides me along the
right paths for his names sake.
COMMENTARY PEARLS
Today's Scripture tells us that our
Shepherd guides us along the right paths - paths of
righteousness. That is true, but sadly, we often shake off
His guiding hand. His path might interest us for
a while, but then we allow sin to beckon us
down a detour. The old hymn writer wrote, "Prone
to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the
God I love" (Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
by Robert Robinson). It's true, isn't it? We
are so prone to wander - so inclined to leave
His path and run away from His lordship. But how
gracious and patient He is with us! The psalmist
David wrote, He knows how we are formed, he
remembers that we are dust (Psa. 103:14).
God is the One who forgives our sin time
after time and makes available His grace that
redeems every wayward attitude and action. He will
hear our confession and will guide us back on his
"right paths.
Lord God, You know me so well. I'm a
sheep that keeps wandering away from the Good
Shepherd, putting myself in danger and ending up in
desolate places. Forgive me for taking detours from
Your path for my life. Please help me not to
wander! I want to be the sheep that follows closest
to Your heels. [A Spectacle of Glory by Joni
Eareckson Tada and Larry Libby]
Life is composed of starts and stops.
When I took a couple guys from our staff
for a hike one day, I noticed that we had both
starts and stops along the way. We stopped to look
at something on the side of the trail; we
started again. We checked the trail maps; we paused
for breaks.
On your journey in life, youre not
always walking. It will always include starts and
stops. In fact, there are some things youll need
to stop doing and some things youll need to
start doing. When you know what those are,
youll be prepared to see the signs from God that,
in his goodness, he has set all along the way.
If David were writing Psalm 23:3 today,
he might say, God keeps me on track. The
Good Shepherd doesnt just feed us. He leads
us. He doesnt just correct us. He directs
us.
You may wonder then, Why is it so
difficult to figure out what God wants me to do with
my life? Why does Gods will often seem
hidden? Is God playing games with me? Does God enjoy
confusing me? Of course not.
God has given us a roadmap: the Bible.
God has given us a compass: our conscience. God
has also given us a personal guidance counselor:
the Holy Spirit. Clearly, God wants to lead us
in the paths of righteousness. This is
important to understand, because God never intended
for you to figure out the steps of your journey
without him.
How you get on mission and how you
succeed at your mission are Gods
responsibilities. Your responsibility is to seek his guidance
and obey his directions. [Daily Devotional by
