John 4:14 - Living Water.
John 4:14 (NIV) whoever drinks the
water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the
water I give them will become in them a spring of
water welling up to eternal life."
John 4:14 (NLT) those who drink the
water I give will never be thirsty again. It
becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving
them eternal life.
COMMENTARY PEARL
When we visited Texas in March a few
years ago, the ground was covered with what I call
God green." We see it in the California hills in
the spring too. This green is unique and can't
be brought about by any human effort. People
can water their gardens, irrigate their land and
crops, or have expensive, high-tech sprinkler
systems covering park lawns, yet never be able to
re-create this color. It only happens after God sends
rain. And it arrives quickly, sometimes overnight.
It has an inner, almost-radiant brilliance to
it.
The rain that brings about this
miraculous, vibrant color reminds me of the living water
Jesus talked about - water that can create a
remarkable transformation in our lives.
Jesus talked about living water when He
met a Samaritan woman at the well. An outcast in
her own town, she was alone at the well in the
heat of the day. As she and Jesus conversed about
getting a drink, Jesus told her that living water
would satisfy her thirst (see John 4). He was
speaking not of our physical need for liquid but of
our soul's deep thirst for a relationship with
our Creator. No amount of struggle or work or
human effort will ever satisfy that thirst - only
Jesus, the living water. When we ask Him into our
hearts, He fills us with the Holy Spirit, satisfying
us with Himself. The Spirit transforms us into
new, redeemed creations.
God splashes evidence of Himself with
each rain, painting the hillsides with new life.
Even those in the cities can see it in the parks
and in the grass that sprouts between the cracks
of concrete. When we drink the living water -
when our souls are satisfied with God and we are
made new creations by the Spirit - others will
see evidence of our new life as well.
Grace is the work of the Holy
Spirit in transforming our desires so
that knowing Jesus becomes sweeter
than illicit sex, sweeter than money
and what it can buy, sweeter than
every fruitless joy. Grace is God
satisfying our souls with his Son so
that were ruined for anything
else!" Sam Storms
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving Yourself
as living water. You satisfy my deep thirst for
a relationship with You. Teach me never to
reach for anything else to quench my thirst. Thank
You for working your transformation in my life.
May the changes You're making help others see
You in me.
O God, you are my God;
I earnestly search for you. My soul
thirsts for you;
my whole body longs for you in this
parched and weary land where there
is no water. Psalm 63:1 [Earth Psalms
