Psalm 40:1-3 - Here Comes a New Song.
Psalm 40:1-3 (NLT) I waited patiently for
the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and
heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the pit of
despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet
on solid ground and steadied me as I walked
along. 3 He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn
of praise to our God. Many will see what he has
done and be amazed. They will put their trust in
the Lord.
INTRODUCTION
While experiencing trials at the hands of
his enemies, David asked God for help, but the
answer did not come immediately. He waited"and
then God worked! What a change took place: David
went from a pit to a highway, from miry clay to a
rock, and from crying to singing! [Chapter by

It's like your great-grandmothers
recipe for bread: every time you make some bread
you prepare it with the same ingredients, and in
the same way she used to a hundred years ago.
The recipe is old, but the bread you enjoy is
fresh and new.
The new song does not have new
ingredients. It has the same truth as the songs of faith
the psalmists wrote thousands of years ago. But
the new song must be prepared anew in a new
heart of faith.
When we sing the new song, people hear
the grand old truths, but there's a freshness
there, because it comes piping hot from the oven of
a new heart filled with joy in Gods
goodness and faithfulness.

COMMENTARY PEARL
It was talent night at one of our Family
Retreats, and Cindy, a young woman with severe
cerebral palsy, was the last one scheduled to
perform. Cindy's mother pushed her daughter in her
wheelchair out onto the platform. Cindy, she told us,
had been working hard all week on her song...
Amazing Grace. But how was this going to work?
Because of her disability, Cindy couldn't speak.
Then her mother walked off stage and left Cindy
alone. The young woman laboriously stretched out
her twisted fingers and pushed a button on her
communication device attached to her chair. And out came
the monotone computerized voice, Amazing grace,
how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like
me.
As the computer continued the hymn, Cindy
turned her head to face us, the audience, and with
enormous effort, began to mouth all the words, as
best she could. What's more, her smile lit up the
entire place. It was a performance that any opera
star or top Christian recording artist would
envy. Amazing grace is not a new song, but that
night, it was sung in an entirely new way. Although
Cindy was unable to sing the words, it rose up as
a ringing hymn of praise to God. I can imagine
the angels leaning over the edge of heaven,
filled with wonder, to catch every word.
In some parts of the world today, people
risk their very lives to praise Jesus in public.
And there are men and women like Cindy, who
unashamedly lift up his name with physical and emotional
difficulty we can't begin to understand. The question
is, if we are so easily able to praise the name
of Jesus without physical struggle or fear of
reprisal.., why don't we?
Thank you, Lord for the courageous
example of this young woman who declared your praise
even when it was very difficult. Teach me, Lord,

COMMENTARY
Even though the song was composed before
I was born (which makes it a real oldie), I
often find myself humming it in the shower at the
beginning of a busy day, between appointments and
assignments in the middle of a hectic day, and on the
road home at the end of a tiring day. Somehow it
adds a soothing touch of oil to the grind:
"Without a song the day would never end without a
song "
True, isn't it? The right combination of
words and melody seldom fails to work its magic.
And given the pressures and demands we are
forced to cope with on a daily basis, we could use
a little magic.
The homemaker with children at her feet
who faces fourteen or more hours a day in the
grind of an endless list of chores. The
professional who deals with the grind of people, people,
people. The truck driver who heads into the grind of
traffic snarls and monotonous miles. The athlete who
lives with the grind of unending hours of
practice. Students and faculty who face the cynical
grind of daily preparation and assignments, exams
and papers.
Fact is, no matter who you are or what
you do, the grind ain't gonna go away! The sales
person has quotas. The performer has rehearsals.
The therapist can't escape one depressed soul
after another. The preacher is never free of
sermon preparation. The broadcaster cannot get away
from the clock any more than the military person
can escape the hassle of red tape. Days don't
end roads don't bend help!
The question is, how do we live beyond
the daily grind? The answer is, a song. But not
just any song! Certainly not some mindless,
earsplitting tune yelled into a microphone. No, not that.
I have in mind some songs that are really old.
We're talking ancient here. In fact, they are the
ones inspired and composed by our creator God.
They're called psalms.
These are the timeless songs that have
yielded delicious fruit in every generation. Not
silly ditties, but strong melodious messages
specially designed to help us live beyond the grind.
That's right, beyond it. We'll get along as long
as a psalm is strong in our souls."
Those age-old compositions drip with the
oil of glory that enables us to live beyond the
grind. Songs of victory, affirmation, and
encouragement, of confidence-giving strength, of hope, of
compassion.
Without God's song in our soul, our long
days will never end and those wearisome roads
will never bend.
God's Book is full of songs - 150 of
them. Let's sing them frequently and allow their
time-tested lyrics to oil our days.
When the long days wont end and
wearisome roads never bend, be sure to have one of
