Romans 15:4 - Finding Encouragement, Patience and Hope.
Romans 15:4 (NIV) For everything that was
written in the past was written to teach us, so that
through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and
the encouragement they provide we might have
hope.
COMMENTARY PEARL
A friend and I were talking about our
grown children, and our longing for stronger and
deeper relationships with them. I shared that the
last time one of my boys stayed with us, I
imagined the great conversations we would have.
Instead, he was busy and away most of the time, and I
had few interactions with him. My friend and I
realized that when we set our hopes on our own plans
and prescriptions for how things should unfold,
we are often disappointed. That disappointment
can even lead us to give up on improved
communication ever happening. Have you ever felt that
sense of hopelessness, the temptation to believe
things will never change?
We encouraged each other to instead
invite Jesus to create opportunities in ways we may
not expect and to help us be available to His
prompting when those moments come. We decided to keep
praying in faith that He is working in our
childrens lives and our relationships with them. We
wont give up hope, but well stop measuring our
hope by our own expectations.
Right after our conversation, my friend
received a daily Bible verse email: Romans 15:4. I
love when Jesus joins in to the conversation that
way. He reminded us that the Scriptures will
encourage us and that He does want us to keep hoping
for all good things.
When we expect specific outcomes were
often disappointed, but when we watch expectantly
for Jesus, well never be disappointed. by
