Jude 1:1, 2 - Love Multiplied.

Jude 1:1, 2 (ESV) Jude, a servant of Jesus 
Christ and brother of James, To those who are 
called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus 
Christ: 2 May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied 
to you.  

COMMENTARY PEARL

   My son and his wife were expecting their 
third child close to Christmas. Big sister and 
brother seemed excited about the coming baby but a 
little uneasy about the change the birth would 
bring. Our five-year-old granddaughter asked her 
parents if they would love her less once the new 
baby arrived.  
   As we gathered around the Advent wreath 
in the living room, our son helped his daughter 
with an object lesson. He lit the first candle. 
Your mommy and I love each other. This flame is 
like that love. Then we had you. He lit the 
second candle. That didnt take away the light 
from the first candle, it added more. Then we had 
your brother. He lit another candle. Did 
that take away any love from you? Of course not. 
Love keeps growing. Now when the new baby comes, 
well all have love for her too, but it will never 
take away the love we have for you.  
   My heart swelled as I listened, and 
memories swirled of my own wedding day, each of our 
childrens births, and now our grandchildrens lives. 
Yet her question wasnt a silly one. Love is 
difficult. In our own power, we sometimes do feel 
depleted, unable to love each person Jesus brings 
across our path. Our own desires get in the way, 
our limitations exhaust us, and we need 
supernatural wisdom to figure out the best way to offer 
love to each unique person. Only our holy Savior 
is able to give us unselfish, unfailing, and 
perceptive relationships with family, friends, and even 
enemies. As we follow Jesus, He truly multiplies our

COMMENTARY

   I heard about a woman who went to the 
bank where she had her accounts and said, I 
want to open up a joint bank account. 
   Who would you like to open it up 
with? the employee asked. 
   A multimillionaire, she answered. 
Do you know any? 
   If youre a Christian, you have a joint 
account with someone better than a multimillionaire. 
You have a joint account with the Creator of the 
universe. 
   The psalmist wrote, I will lift up my 
eyes to the hills - from whence comes my help? My 
help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and 
earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He 
who keeps you will not slumber (121:1"3 
NKJV). The Lord is your keeper. 
   We find this in the New Testament as 
well. In 1 Peter 1:5 we read that we are kept 
by the power of God through faith for salvation 
ready to be revealed in the last time (NKJV), 
and Jude 1:1 says we are called, sanctified 
by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus 
Christ (NKJV). 
   Preserved in Christ is an 
interesting phrase that means continually kept. In 
the original language it refers to a continuing 
result of a past action. Lets say youve made 
the final mortgage payment on your house. You 
dont have to keep paying the bank. Its your 
house. Just enjoy it. 
   In the same way, your salvation is bought 
and paid for. You are not going to lose it, so 
enjoy it. You are kept by God.  
   If there is something you value, you tend 
to keep your eye on it. And if there is someone 
you value, you keep your eye on them. 
   God will keep you. He will keep you to
