2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) For the Spirit God gave 
us does not make us timid, but gives us power, 
love and self-discipline.  

2 Timothy 1:7 (CEV) God's Spirit doesn't 
make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us 
power, love, and self-control.  

2 Timothy 1:7 (ERV) The Spirit God gave us 
does not make us afraid. His Spirit is a source 
of power and love and self-control. 

COMMENTARY PEARL

   Grandpa, please! Just tell me!" our 
fourth-grade grandson, Logan, pleaded. 
   My husband, Chuck, sat at the kitchen 
table helping Logan with his homework. "How do you 
make an equivalent fraction?" Chuck said. The 
subject was math, and the problem was converting a 
word problem to a math equation, which Logan had 
been studying in school. 
   "I don't know!" Logan moaned, writhing in 
his chair. "Please help me!" 
   "I am helping you," Chuck said.
   It seemed what Logan really wanted was 
for Chuck to give him the answer instead of 
figuring out the problem himself. He knew Chuck could 
do it faster and better. But we knew Logan 
needed to know how to do the problem if he was 
going to learn the lesson. 
   The situation reminded me of the lesson I 
learned when I was laid off. Like Logan, I wanted 
God to snap his fingers and instantly provide 
another job. But He didn't, and I had to do the work 
- write the rsum, look for job openings, 
schedule the interviews, and be open to possibilities 
God had for me. The process took longer than I 
wanted, and several opportunities fell through, but 
when the right door opened, I knew which position 
I should take. 
   Once Logan figured out he had to do his 
own work, he started listening to Chuck's hints 
about how to find the answer. And not only did he 
find the right answer, but he also learned how to 
get it. 
   In the same way, God helps us by giving 
us what we need to work things through for 
ourselves so we can learn how to handle life's 
challenges. 
   Lord, thank You for giving us a mind that 
can work out life's problems. And thank You for 
providing us with just enough help to succeed. Marilyn
