Psalm 121:1, 2 - Lift Up My Eyes Unto The Lord.

Psalm 121:1, 2 (NIV) I lift up my eyes to 
the mountains - where does my help come from? My 
help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and 
earth.  

COMMENTARY PEARL

   When I received some unwelcome news, I 
knew life would go on, but it would be harder. My 
heart ached. 
   That weekend, my husband drove me to the 
mountains so I could find peace. We hiked through an 
old forest, rich with the scent of cedar. Birds 
chattered from treetops, and wildflowers bloomed. I 
repeated a silent prayer, each word stamped into 
eternity by a footfall: Help me see You and hear You, 
Jesus. I feel so alone. 
   No answer came. Feeling empty, I walked 
on. 
   We passed a small waterfall and sat 
beside a still deep pool, its water clear as glass. 
I leaned over the surface and spied my 
reflection. 
   I'd spent hours begging Jesus to comfort 
me. All the while, He'd called to me in the 
melody of birdsong and the sweet music of a rushing 
brook. I'd felt His hug as sunlight warmed my back. 
He'd written a love song across the sky, as 
sunrays shone through the puffy clouds. A wave of 
peace washed over me. 
   Jesus doesn't always speak in a way 
that's easy to understand. He doesn't plaster His 
love on billboards or purchase airtime on radio 
stations. Instead, He cairns us with His creation, 
releases us from worry, freeing us to experience the 
sublime joy of His presence. Heidi Gaul

COMMENTARY

In training His disciples, Jesus chose to 
withdraw from the confusion of the city to the quiet 
of the fields and hills, as more in harmony 
with the lessons of self-abnegation He desired to 
teach them. And during His ministry He loved to 
gather the people about Him under the blue heavens, 
on some grassy hillside, or on the beach beside 
the lake. Here, surrounded by the works of His 
own creation, He could turn the thoughts of His 
hearers from the artificial to the natural. In the 
growth and development of nature were revealed the 
principles of His kingdom. As men should lift up their 
eyes to the hills of God, and behold the 
wonderful works of His hands, they could learn 
precious lessons of divine truth. Christs teaching 
would be repeated to them in the things of nature. 
So it is with all who go into the fields with 
Christ in their hearts. They will feel themselves 
surrounded with a holy influence. The things of nature 
take up the parables of our Lord, and repeat His 
counsels. By communion with God in nature, the mind is 
uplifted, and the heart finds rest. DA291
