Matthew 6:13 - For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
Matthew 6:13 (KJV) For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
INTRODUCTION
The Doxology
The end of the Lord's Prayer " "For
Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever. Amen" " is a doxology so beautiful that it
somehow seems almost irreverent to try to dissect
it. Some believe that Jesus did not actually say
these words. They claim that they were added by
someone else at a later date, which is why they are
not included in some versions of the Bible. Some
manuscripts have it, and some do not. I have looked long
at the evidence for and against their inclusion
in the sacred Scriptures, and I am perfectly
satisfied myself that they were part of Jesus'
original pattern of prayer.
The prayer ends as it begins, with an
assertion of God's majesty and glory: "Yours is the
kingdom." I believe that the emphasis here should be
placed on the word "is," to read, "Yours is the
kingdom""now.
Despite all appearances to the contrary,
God has never abdicated His position as ruler of
the universe. What a heartening thought this can
be in these days, a thought to fill the soul
with song and flood the heart with hope and
gladness. It is true that there are many things in the
world that militate against His authority"war,
poverty, unemployment, drink, gambling, social
impurity, and so on. All these seem a flat and final
refutation of the phrase "Yours is the kingdom," but
their days are numbered. The hour will come when
the kingdoms of this world will signal their
final surrender and pledge allegiance to their
rightful Lord.
O Father, help me to see, despite all the
situations and circumstances which might deny Your
eternal Kingship, that You are reigning over the
world now. Yours is the final control. I am so
thankful. Amen. [Every Day With Jesus Bible with

Thine is the kingdom. This clause introduces
the doxology to the Lords Prayer. Important
textual evidence may be cited (cf. p. 146) for the
omission of this doxology. It is not in Lukes
version of the prayer (Luke 11:4). However, the
sentiment it expresses is certainly scriptural, and
closely parallels 1 Chron. 29:11"13. A shorter
doxology occurs in 2 Tim. 4:18. The kingdom,
power, and glory here ascribed to the Father
certainly include the present kingdom of divine grace
in the hearts of men, but look forward
primarily to the glorious kingdom to be ushered in
with the return of Christ to this earth to reign
in power and glory (see on v. 10). [SDA Bible

COMMENTARY PEARL
Our Lord's prayer has given us a
blueprint for the Great House of God. From the living
room of our Father to the family room with our
friends, we are learning why David longed to "live in
the house of the LORD forever" (Ps. 23:6). In
God's house we have everything we need: a solid
foundation, an abundant table, sturdy walls, and an
impenetrable roof of grace.
And now, having seen every room and
explored each corner, we have one final stop. Not to
a new room, but to one we have visited
earlier. We return to the chapel. We return to the
room of worship. The chapel, remember, is where
we stand before God and confess, "Hallowed be
thy name."
The chapel is the only room in the house
of God we visit twice. It's not hard to see
why. It does us twice as much good to think about
God as it does to think about anyone or anything
else. God wants us to begin and end our prayers
thinking of him. Jesus is urging us to look at the
peak more than we look at the trail. The more we
focus up there, the more inspired we are down
here.
Some years ago a sociologist accompanied
a group of mountain climbers on an expedition.
Among other things, he observed a distinct
correlation between cloud cover and contentment. When
there was no cloud cover and the peak was in view,
the climbers were energetic and cooperative.
When the gray clouds eclipsed the view of the
mountaintop, though, the climbers were sullen and
selfish.
The same thing happens to us. As long as
our eyes are on his majesty there is a bounce in
our step. But let our eyes focus on the dirt
beneath us and we will grumble about every rock and
crevice we have to cross. For this reason Paul
urged, "Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground,
absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look
up, and be alert to the things going on around
Christ"that's where the action is. See things from his
perspective" (Col 3:1-2 MSG).
Paul challenges you to "be alert to the
things going on around Christ." The Psalmist
reminds you to do the same, only he uses a different
phrase. "O magnify the LORD with me and let us exalt
his name together" (Ps. 34:3).
Magnify. What a wonderful verb to
describe what we do in the chapel. When you magnify
an object, you enlarge it so that you can
understand it. When we magnify God, we do the same. We
enlarge our awareness of him so we can understand
him more. This is exactly what happens in the
chapel of worship - we take our mind off ourselves
and set it on God. The emphasis is on him.
"Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever."
And this is exactly the purpose of this
final phrase in the Lord's prayer. [Max Lucado

COMMENTARY
The last like the first sentence of the
Lord's Prayer, points to our Father as above all
power and authority and every name that is named.
The Saviour beheld the years that stretched out
before His disciples, not, as they had dreamed,
lying in the sunshine of worldly prosperity and
honor, but dark with the tempests of human hatred
and satanic wrath. Amid national strife and
ruin, the steps of the disciples would be beset
with perils, and often their hearts would be
oppressed by fear. They were to see Jerusalem a
desolation, the temple swept away, its worship forever
ended, and Israel scattered to all lands, like
wrecks on a desert shore. Jesus said, "Ye shall
hear of wars and rumors of wars." "Nation shall
rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and
earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the
beginning of sorrows." Matthew 24:6-8. Yet Christ's
followers were not to fear that their hope was lost or
that God had forsaken the earth. The power and
the glory belong unto Him whose great purposes
would still move on unthwarted toward their
consummation. In the prayer that breathes their daily
wants, the disciples of Christ were directed to
look above all the power and dominion of evil,
unto the Lord their God, whose kingdom ruleth
over all and who is their Father and everlasting
Friend.
The ruin of Jerusalem was a symbol of the
final ruin that shall overwhelm the world. The
prophecies that received a partial fulfillment in the
overthrow of Jerusalem have a more direct application
to the last days. We are now standing on the
threshold of great and solemn events. A crisis is
before us, such as the world has never witnessed.
And sweetly to us, as to the first disciples,
comes the assurance that God's kingdom ruleth over
all. The program of coming events is in the hands
of our Maker. The Majesty of heaven has the
destiny of nations, as well as the concerns of His
church, in His own charge. The divine Instructor is
saying to every agent in the accomplishment of His
plans, as He said to Cyrus, "I girded thee, though
thou hast not known Me." Isaiah 45:5.
In the vision of the prophet Ezekiel
there was the appearance of a hand beneath the
wings of the cherubim. This is to teach His
servants that it is divine power which gives them
success. Those whom God employs as His messengers are
not to feel that His work is dependent upon
them. Finite beings are not left to carry this
burden of responsibility. He who slumbers not, who
is continually at work for the accomplishment
of His designs, will carry forward His own
work. He will thwart the purposes of wicked men,
and will bring to confusion the counsels of
those who plot mischief against His people. He who
is the King, the Lord of hosts, sitteth between
the cherubim, and amid the strife and tumult of
nations He guards His children still. He who ruleth
in the heavens is our Saviour. He measures
every trial, He watches the furnace fire that must
test every soul. When the strongholds of kings
shall be overthrown, when the arrows of wrath
shall strike through the hearts of His enemies,
His people will be safe in His hands.
"Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the
power, and the glory, and the victory, and the
majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the
earth is Thine. In Thine hand is power and
might; and in Thine hand it is to make great, and
to give strength unto all." 1 Chronicles 29:11,
12. MB102-22
CLOSING THOUGHT
End Your Day with a Good Word
How you end your day makes all the
difference in how you sleep. And how you sleep makes
all the difference in how youre able to
function the next day. To live with purpose, you need
to end your day well.
End your day with a benediction - a good
word. There is no better word than Gods Word.
Read some promises from God. Be encouraged by
truth, like this last line from the Lord's Prayer:
"For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the
glory forever. Amen (Matthew 6:13 AMP).
When you end your day with this verse,
you're going to sleep a whole lot better, because
it contains two incredibly encouraging truths:
God is in control.
Politicians aren't in control. Other
nations aren't. Your boss isn't. God is ultimately
in control. The Bible says, "The kings heart
is like a stream of water directed by the LORD;
he guides it wherever he pleases" (Proverbs
21:1 NLT). That's why the world changes when
God's people pray. He's waiting for us to talk to
him and surrender the burdens that are keeping
us from rest.
God and his family win in the end!
This isnt the end of the story. When
you read the last chapter of the Bible, you
discover that God wins. If the last thing you look at
before you go to bed is either news or late-night
TV hosts talking about the news, then youll
go to bed depressed. But if you go to bed with
Gods truth playing in your head, then youll go
to bed with peace.
Holocaust survivor Corrie Ten Boom said,
"If you look at the world, you'll be distressed.
If you look within, you'll be depressed. If you
look at Christ, you'll be at rest."
Where are you looking to find rest?
Before you end your day, remind yourself of Gods
truth. Say to him, "God, you're in control. This is
not the end of the story, and we win in the end.
Good night, Lord. I'll see you in the morning."
Then, sleep in peace. [Daily Devotional
