Isaiah 9:6 - Gift of All Gifts; For Unto Us A Son Is Given.
Isaiah 9:6 (KJV) For unto us a child is
born, unto us a son is given: and the government
shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The
everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given, and the government will
be on his shoulders. And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (NLT) For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us. The government will rest
on his shoulders. And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
INTRODUCTION
A royal son, a son of David (see v. 7; see
also 2Sa 7:14; Ps 2:7; Mt 1:1; 3:17; Lk 1:32; Jn
3:16 and notes). Wonderful Counselor. In Hebrew
each of the four throne names of the Messiah
consists of two elements. Counselor points to
the Messiah as a king (Mic 4:9) who determines
and carries out a program of action (see 14:27,
purposed; Ps 20:4, plans). As Wonderful
Counselor, the coming Son of David will carry out a
royal program that will cause all the world to
marvel. What that program will be is spelled out in
ch. 11, and more fully in chs. 24"27 (see
25:1"Wonderful things, things planned [counseled] long
ago). In 28:29 the same two Hebrew words
underlying Wonderful Counselor describe the Lord
whose plan is wonderful (see also Jdg 13:18 and
note). Mighty God. See 10:21. His divine power as a
warrior is stressed (cf. Ps 24:8). Everlasting
Father. He will be an enduring, compassionate
provider and protector (cf. 40:9"11). This does not
mean that God the Father and God the Son are one
and the same (a heresy called modalism; see Mt
28:19 and note). Prince of Peace. His rule will
bring wholeness and well-being to individuals and
to society (11:6"9). [NIV SB 2020]
This child, the Messiah, would be Davids
descendant (11:1). he will be called: These names
can be read as four throne names, signifying the
nature of the childs rule: (1) The Wonderful
Counselor (or Wonderful, Counselor) conforms to
Gods wisdom (11:1; 25:1; 28:29; 40:13), unlike
the counselors of Judah (1:26; 3:3). (2) Mighty
God is an affirmation of the Messiahs divine
nature. (3) He cares for his children as the
Everlasting Father, the father whose care continues
forever (cp. 22:21; 63:16). (4) The Prince of Peace
is a leader who brings peace.
Alternatively, the four names could be collapsed into two:
(1) A Wonderful Counselor [is] the Mighty
God; and (2) the Everlasting Father [is] a
Prince of Peace (on his nature, see 11:1"9).
Jesus Christ, the Son of David (Matt 1:1;
Luke 1:32; see also Isa 7:14; 8:3, 18), will
bring in the kingdom of his peace (Rev 19). [NLT
SB 2008]
COMMENTARY PEARL
Mighty God
Its kind of hard to wrap our minds
around the idea that a beautiful little baby, born
in a manger in Bethlehem, was God Almighty. He
was deity in diapers. My friend Max Lucado put
it this way: Divinity arrived. Heaven opened
herself and placed her most precious one in a human
womb. The omnipotent, in one instant, made himself
breakable.
Jesus was fully God and fully man. He was
not just a good man; He was the God-man. God
came to this earth and walked among us. Jesus
became one of us without ceasing to be Himself. He
became human without ceasing to be God. And Isaiah
9:6 tells us that He is the Mighty God.
That takes care of the demands of life.
He has all the power that you need. Whatever
youre facing, whatever challenge or difficulty
youre going through, the Almighty God has taken
residence in your heart if you have given your life to
Jesus Christ.
In addition, Isaiah calls him Everlasting
Father. This brings hope and encouragement to those
of us who grew up without a father or who
perhaps had a harsh, abusive father.
When I was growing up, my mother was
married and divorced seven different times, so I
didnt have a father figure. But when I became a
believer in Jesus Christ, I suddenly had a heavenly
Father looking out for me and with whom I could
come into a relationship.
We have a Father in Heaven who loves us.
Because Jesus died on the cross and rose from the
dead, we can now call God our Father if weve
put our faith in Jesus Christ. Not only is He
our Father, but Hes our Everlasting Father.
That means Hes not only our Father on Earth,
but He also will receive us into Heaven one day.
