Matthew 5:5 (NIV) Blessed are the meek, for 
they will inherit the earth.  

Matthew 5:5 (HCSB) The gentle are blessed, 
for they will inherit the earth.  

Matthew 5:5 (NLT) God blesses those who are 
humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.  

INTRODUCTION

The meek "shall inherit the earth." It was 
through the desire for self-exaltation that sin 
entered into the world, and our first parents lost 
the dominion over this fair earth, their 
kingdom. It is through self-abnegation that Christ 
redeems what was lost. And He says we are to 
overcome as He did. Revelation 3:21. Through humility 
and self-surrender we may become heirs with Him 
when "the meek shall inherit the earth." Psalm 
37:11. MB18 

COMMENTARY PEARL

   Decades ago, I was serving at a mission 
base in Hong Kong. Each day, we would walk to a 
local streetcar to ride to the meeting place. As 
people surged toward the door of the tram, I found 
myself being elbowed aside. I often came close to 
missing the tram as others hurried aboard. A friend 
who had lived there a long time coached me to be 
more assertive. The city was fast-paced, and this 
was a time when meekness wasn't appropriate. 
   Most of the time, it is much easier to 
assert my own desires than appreciate the beauty of 
meekness. I may not elbow my way onto a tram, but I 
insert myself into conversations, focus on my own 
needs, and assert the priority of my struggles over 
the person next to me. I've wrestled with what 
Jesus means by meekness. Perhaps I fear that by 
making way for another, I'll never get my spot. Yet 
there is blessing in following His example: 
putting the needs of another before my own, 
listening more and talking less, being less of a drama 
queen about my own small struggles, and giving 
more compassion to the suffering of others. 
   Meekness is not cowardice or shrinking 
from gifts and callings. But it is a shift in 
priorities. I like how A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh 
said it: "Love is taking a few steps backward, 
maybe even more ... to give way to the happiness 
of the person you love." 
   When I think of how Jesus left His throne 
in heaven to serve, comfort, and sacrifice, I'm 
challenged to find ways to let His type of meekness 
grow in my heart. Sharon Hinck
