Hebrews 11:1 - FAITH.
Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) Now faith is confidence
in what we hope for and assurance about what we
do not see.
INTRODUCTION
Two words describe faith: 'sure' and
'certain.' These two qualities need a secure beginning
and ending point. The beginning point of faith
is believing in God's character - he 'is' who
he says. The end point is believing in God's
promises - he will 'do' what he says. When we believe
that God will fulfill his promises even though we
don't see those promises materializing yet, we
demonstrate true faith. [Life Application SB]
COMMENTARY PEARL
After shopping in stores that line an
oceanfront, 1 returned to my third-floor room at the
inn. The view that morning had been incredible,
and I looked forward to relaxing on the balcony
while my skin drank in the sunshine. Instead, a
wall of fog, dense as a winter blanket, roiled
in. I couldn't see the waves tumbling and
tossing their crowns or people-watch the tourists
strolling along the shore. My heart sank.
Though I prayed for the skies to clear,
Jesus had different plans. Seated there, my eyes
still closed, He offered blessings I'd have missed
had I continued relying on my vision. I heard
the haunting cry of seagulls, the crashing of
waves. I smelled the brisk bite of salty air and
felt the tickle of mist on my cheeks. Hidden from
my sight, the sea remained, its magnificence
undiminished by my blindness.
Sometimes challenges steamroll into my
world, blinding me to life's goodness. But when I
slow down and turn my focus to things unseen, I
find Jesus working sublime peace into the
situation. Whether He's calming my heart through loving
friends or whispering His reassurances on the
breeze, I sense His presence. My "fog" lifts.
I can trust tomorrow will be brighter
because Jesus helps me see and hear and feel beyond
my troubles and into eternity. "So we fix our
eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,
since what is seen is temporary, but what is
unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18, NIV). Heidi
