Philippians 2:4 (NIV) Each of you should 
look not only to your own interests, but also to 
the interests of others.  

Philippians 2:4 (NLT) Dont look out only 
for your own interests, but take an interest in 
others, too.  

INTRODUCTION

Selfishness and self-centeredness can be 
found at the core of most interpersonal problems.  
Each one wants his or her own way; one withholds 
what should be shared; the other consumes what 
should be saved.  There is no end to the cycle of 
"I will do it my way!"  That is, until Jesus 
Christ is made Lord in your life!  When Jesus is 
Lord, self is displaced; as we continue to 
surrender, self dwindles.  The degree to which Jesus 
reigns in your heart determines your ability to 
give instead of take.  Because of Jesus, 
relationships are changed:  we become willing to share, 
and give.  How are you doing in this area?  
Examine the core of interpersonal problems in your 
life, and where necessary, change them with God's 
help.  [In His Time; Walk With Wisdom] 

COMMENTARY PEARL

   Miss Sophie, an active member of my 
childhood church, was deaf. Her husband didn't share 
her faith. She never had children of her own. 
But those things never stopped Miss Sophie from 
living a full and joyful life. Her secret? 
Motivated by love for Christ, she was always keenly 
interested in other people - everyone around her, as a 
matter of fact. 
   She loved on me during my teenage 
passive-aggressive years. When I brought my boyfriend to church 
on weekend visits from college, she'd tease us, 
calling us "the lovebirds." When I moved away as a 
young wife, she sent letters filled with 
expressions of love and her Guideposts magazine from the 
previous month. Whenever we went back to visit 
family, I always managed a visit with Miss Sophie so 
she could gush over my kids. This precious lady 
passed away just days shy of her hundredth 
birthday. 
   God created us with a need for family. 
Even if we didn't have a single living biological 
relative, we would still be surrounded by spiritual 
family - those who have accepted the gift of grace 
extended by Jesus. As a young, transplanted mom, I 
appreciated any interest that older members of our 
church showed my children. Now I'm a senior adult 
living away from family members, and I try to be 
alert to similar needs that I can fill. 
   During His earthly ministry, Jesus valued 
people at every stage of life, from babies to 
elderly widows. If I follow His example, I'll 
discover the mutual blessings that come from adding 
to my family by reaching across generational
