Romans 15:13 - Hope, Joy and Peace are in a Relationship with Jesus.
Romans 15:13 (NLT) I pray that God, the
source of hope, will fill you completely with joy
and peace because you trust in him. Then you
will overflow with confident hope through the
power of the Holy Spirit.
INTRODUCTION
Paul prays that their faith may give them a
life full of joy and peace and hope, which are
all the results of true faith and of the
presence of the Holy Spirit. [SDA Bible Commentary]
Paul again prays for the believers (as in
15:5). This time Paul prays that the God who gives
hope will give them joy (as they anticipate what
God has in store for them) and peace (as they
rest in the assurance that God will do as he has
promised). Then, the believers can overflow with hope
by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is by the
power of the Holy Spirit that God accomplishes his
care for his people - giving them endurance,
encouragement, unity (15:5), hope, joy, and peace. Hope
comes as a by-product of the Holy Spirit's work.
It does not come from our own senses or
experiences. [Life Application Commentary]
COMMENTARY PEARLS
Hope For The Heart
Perhaps the greatest psychological,
spiritual, and medical need that all people have is the
need for hope. Dr. McNair Wilson, the famous
cardiologist, remarked in his autobiography, Doctor's
Progress, "Hope is the medicine I use more than any
other - hope can cure nearly anything."
Years ago Dr. Harold Wolff, professor of
medicine at Cornell University Medical College and
associate professor of psychiatry, said, "Hope, like
faith and a purpose in life, is medicinal. This is
not a statement of belief, but a conclusion
proved by meticulously controlled scientific
experiment."
When hope dies, despair will overwhelm
us. Hope is both biologically and
psychologically vital to us. Men and women must have hope -
and true hope comes only from Christ. He gives
us hope for the future as we turn in faith to
Him - hope for eternity, and hope right now.
Hoping in earthly things often leads to
despair. Accomplishments dont bring the peace we
had hoped. Relationships dont fulfill us the
way we hoped. But, when we place our hope in
Christ and the salvation he offers, that hope never
disappoints (Romans 5:5). [Hope for Each Day by Billy
Graham re Psalm 16:9]
Looking For Lasting Joy
How often have you found what you were
looking for in life, only to realize it didn't bring
you the satisfaction you thought it would? It is
life's ultimate frustration - thinking we will find
fulfillment in the things of this world. But they can
never bring lasting happiness. As one bumper
sticker I saw expressed it, "All I want is a little
more than I have now."
We look for love, security, and happiness
through our jobs, our possessions, our relationships
- but if they really brought lasting joy,
wouldn't we have testimonies to that effect from
millions of people all over the world? Instead, we
find emptiness, discontent, and hopelessness.
Try putting Christ first and watch how
your life is turned around. You will discover
that He alone is the source of the love, peace,
and joy you have been searching for.
No person, possession, or earthly
pleasure can bring us the joy our souls crave; they
offer temporary happiness and best. Pure and
permanent joy is only found in the presence of Christ.
[Hope for Each Day by Billy Graham]
Peace In The Storm
A wonderful old hymn says, "He gives us
peace in the midst of a storm."
In life we face all kinds of storms. We
usually think of the personal "storms" that come our
way - financial worries, problems in our
marriage or family, illness, the betrayal of a
friend, and so forth. But we face other kinds of
storms that threaten to engulf us also: storms of
materialism, storms of secularism, storms of moral
degeneracy, storms of injustice, terrorism, and war.
Do you remember the violent storm that
came upon Jesus and His disciples one night on
the Sea of Galilee? His disciples grew panicky -
but Jesus stayed fast asleep. He was at peace
because He knew God was in control. He was at peace
also because He was sovereign over the storm, and
He knew it would vanish at His Word: "Peace, be
still!" (Mark 4:39).
His Word still calms the turmoil in our
lives. Is some storm making you fearful today? Stay
close to Jesus, for His Word brings peace. [Hope
for Each Day by Billy Graham]
