Joshua 1:9 - Courage That Counts.
Joshua 1:9 (NIV) Have I not commanded you?
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do
not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will
be with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 (NLT) This is my command - be
strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or
discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever
you go.
COMMENTARY PEARL
No caring father would say to a small
child, "Get out there and learn how to ride your
bike. And don't you come back inside until you
can!"
Instead, good moms and dads instill
courage by instructing, coaching, cheerleading,
guiding, and affirming their children. "You can do
it. I know you can. And I'm right here beside
you."
That "here beside you" principle is the
one cheering me on right now. So many of the
courage or bravery or strengthening verses in the
Bible have that reminder. When we read, "Be
strong. Take courage," we're missing the most
important part if we don't keep reading the following
words, "for I am with you wherever you go" or "I am
with you always." God the Father, Jesus the Son,
and the Holy Spirit within me are the reason I
can take courage no matter what I face, how much
I tremble, or how uncertain the path ahead of
me is. I'm not commanded, "Go out there and
find yourself some courage, and don't come back
in this house until you do" I'm held by loving
arms, watched over by loving eyes, and steadied by
hands that will not falter.
There's a "because - a reason - behind
Jesus's encouragement to stand firm. Because He's
with me, beside me, within me to make it
possible. A. W. Tozer wrote, "The only safe place for
a sheep is by the side of his shepherd,
because the devil does not fear sheep; he just fears
the Shepherd." Cynthia Ruchti
Faith Step: Consider memorizing that A.
W. Tozer quote, as well as Joshua 1:9, And
watch for someone who needs those reminders today.
