1 John 4:16 - God Is Love.
1 John 4:16 (NIV) And so we know and rely on
the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever
lives in love lives in God, and God in him.
COMMENTARY PEARL
My family is gathered around the table
for a holiday dinner. My husband's eyes, full of
mischief, follow me while I serve the food. At the
opposite end of the table, my son-in-law smiles, his
face alight as he glances at my daughter. I lock
eyes with my only child, our mutual love crossing
the table and welling in my heart. We bow our
heads, giving thanks to God for the food and our
blessed Savior. And we rejoice in the warmth of this
circle of love.
Looking at my family makes me think of
another family Mary, Joseph, and the precious
baby Jesus. Great love was shared through their
obedience, and many different types of love were
demonstrated. I learn so much from their story. Mary
obeyed God's request and was gifted with the
priceless love known by only mothers. Joseph cared so
deeply for his fiance that he set aside the
respectability of his previous life to wed her. Together
they forgave those that condemned them and loved
beyond the pain. And as they raised Jesus into
adulthood, they knew the perfect love of our Lord
intimately.
The words used to describe the bond
Jesus's family shared define my closest
relationships: rejoicing, laughter, pain, forgiveness,
trust, patience, loyalty, eternity. I'm blessed to
see Him in so many people in so many ways. I
