Zechariah 9:9 - The Draped Cross.
Zechariah 9:9 (NLT) Rejoice, O people of
Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem!
Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous
and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a
donkey - riding on a donkeys colt.
COMMENTARY PEARL
Ken and Rebecca loved to surprise their
friends with unexpected gifts - a pot of cheerful
flowers on the front porch, a gift card to a
restaurant in the mail, a basket of fresh peaches on
the church pew. Just before Palm Sunday one
year, they loaded blessings into their truck and
began their route from house to house.
When my parents answered the knock at
their door, Ken presented them with a three-foot
cross made from treated pine. "Happy Easter!" he
said. "Hammer this into the ground at the end of
your driveway."
Rebecca handed them three sashes: one
purple, one black, and one white. "Drape the purple
one on the cross on Palm Sunday," she said.
"Purple stands for royalty and for King Jesus riding
into Jerusalem on a donkey. On Good Friday,
change it to the black sash to represent Jesus's
death. Then on Easter Sunday, drape the white cloth
on the cross to celebrate the resurrection."
Though years have passed and Ken is now
in heaven, my family continues the touching
tradition of the draped cross. Easter after Easter,
the special gift portrays the story of King
Jesus to passersby. It also provides a creative
tool for us to teach our children and
grandchildren about the resurrection. Ken and Rebecca's
example of giving challenges me to surprise others
with kindness, especially in ways that proclaim
Jesus to the world. Becky Alexander
Faith Step: Give a friend an unexpected
goodie basket. Include simple items that are
purple, black, and white. Add a card that explains
the significance of the colors. [Mornings With
