Luke 14:33 - Jesus Our All in All.

Luke 14:33 (NKJV) So likewise, whoever of
you does not forsake all that he has cannot be
My disciple.

Luke 14:33 (AMP) So then, any of you who
does not forsake (renounce, surrender claim to,
give up, say good-bye to) all that he has cannot
be My disciple.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus audience was well aware of what it
meant to carry ones own cross. When the Romans
led a criminal to his execution site, he was
forced to carry the cross on which he would die.
This showed his submission to Rome and warned
observers that they had better submit too. Jesus spoke
this teaching to get the crowds to think through
their enthusiasm for him. He encouraged those who
were superficial either to go deeper or to turn
back. Following Christ means total submission to
him"perhaps even to the point of death. [Life
Application SB]

COMMENTARY PEARL

In giving ourselves to God, we must
necessarily give up all that would separate us from Him.
Hence the Saviour says, "Whosoever he be of you
that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be
My disciple." Luke 14:33. Whatever shall draw
away the heart from God must be given up. Mammon
is the idol of many. The love of money, the
desire for wealth, is the golden chain that binds
them to Satan. Reputation and worldly honor are
worshiped by another class. The life of selfish ease
and freedom from responsibility is the idol of
others. But these slavish bands must be broken. We
cannot be half the Lord's and half the world's. We
are not God's children unless we are such
entirely.
There are those who profess to serve God,
while they rely upon their own efforts to obey His
law, to form a right character, and secure
salvation. Their hearts are not moved by any deep sense
of the love of Christ, but they seek to perform
the duties of the Christian life as that which
God requires of them in order to gain heaven.
Such religion is worth nothing. When Christ
dwells in the heart, the soul will be so filled
with His love, with the joy of communion with
Him, that it will cleave to Him; and in the
contemplation of Him, self will be forgotten. Love to
Christ will be the spring of action. Those who feel
the constraining love of God, do not ask how
little may be given to meet the requirements of
God; they do not ask for the lowest standard, but
aim at perfect conformity to the will of their
Redeemer. With earnest desire they yield all and
manifest an interest proportionate to the value of
the object which they seek. A profession of
Christ without this deep love is mere talk, dry
formality, and heavy drudgery. SC44,45

COMMENTARY

A Holy Obsession
When one of my granddaughters was little,
she loved to collect stuffed animals. Whenever I
traveled, she asked me to bring one home for her. But
one day when we were talking on the phone, she
said, Papa, Im not obsessed with stuffed
animals anymore. Im just obsessed with talking to
you.
That warmed my heart. And I thought about
how, as believers, we should feel that way about
our relationship with God. We should all be able
to say, Lord, Im obsessed with talking to
You, walking with You, hearing from You, and
knowing You.
In Luke 14, Jesus made this statement:
So you cannot become my disciple without giving
up everything you own (verse 33 NLT). The
New King James Version translates it this way:
Whoever of you does not forsake all that he has
cannot be My disciple.
Does that mean its a sin to have a car
or a house or money in the bank? Of course not.
From the original language, we could also
translate this verse So you cannot become My
disciple without surrendering your claim to
everything you own.
Its a recognition that God is the
owner. God is in control of it. We recognize that
were simply stewards of what we have for a period
of time.
To be His disciples, we must turn over
the title deeds of our lives to Christ. We are
not actually owners; we are stewards. Everything
we have will be passed on to someone else one
day.
It is not wrong to have a career, but it
is wrong if a career has you. It is not wrong
to have possessions, but it is wrong if your
possessions have you. Things have their place, but not
the most important place.
As Christians, our only real passion and
obsession in life should be Jesus Christ. [Greg Laurie

Losing Yourself and Finding Gods Best
When Jesus said, Whoever of you does
not forsake all that he has cannot be My
disciple, did He mean that Christians must take a vow
of poverty and give away every possession?
No. Jesus was saying that we need to
surrender our claim to our possessions. It simply
means that we understand the ID tags on all that
we have are not ours; theyre Gods.
It means that you recognize it is the
Lords family that He has given you. It is the
Lords life that you are the steward of. They are
the Lords resources that you are spending. It
is the Lords house that He has given to
you.
The Bible says, Or do you not know
that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit
who is in you, whom you have from God, and you
are not your own? For you were bought at a
price; therefore glorify God in your body and in
your spirit, which are Gods (1 Corinthians
6:19-20 NKJV).
We surrender our claim and say, Lord,
it belongs to You. What do You want me to
do? Then we pursue the path that He has for us.
The apostle Paul summed it up well when
he said, I have been crucified with Christ;
it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in
me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I
live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and
gave Himself for me (Galatians 2:20 NKJV).
The crucified life really means one
thing: dying to self. It means losing yourself and,
in the process, finding yourself. Through death
you find life.
What it doesnt mean is that we will be
miserable and unable to live life to its fullest. It
means the opposite. When we discover Gods plan
for us, life becomes what it was meant to be.
