Ecclesiastes 1:2 - Wired to Know God.

Ecclesiastes 1:2 (NLT) Everything is
meaningless, says the Teacher, completely
meaningless!

CONTEXT

1:1-11 Solomon had a purpose for writing
skeptically and pessimistically. Near the end of his
life, looking back on everything he had done, he
saw that most of it seemed meaningless. A common
belief was that good people prospered and the
wicked suffered, but that hadn't proven true in
Solomon's experience. Solomon wrote this book after he
had tried everything and achieved much, only to
find that nothing apart from God made him happy.
He wanted his readers to avoid these same
senseless pursuits. If we try to find meaning in our
accomplishments rather than in God, we will never be
satisfied, and everything we pursue will become
meaningless.

INTRODUCTION

1:2 Solomon's kingdom, Israel, was in its
golden age, but Solomon wanted the people to
understand that success and prosperity don't last long
(Psalm 103:14-16; Isaiah 40:6-8; James 4:14). All
human accomplishments will one day disappear; we
must keep this in mind in order to live wisely.
If we don't, we will become either proud and
self-sufficient when we succeed or sorely disappointed when
we fail. Solomon's goal was to show that
earthly possessions and accomplishments are
ultimately meaningless. Only the pursuit of God brings
real satisfaction. We should honor God in all we
say, think, and do. [Life Application SB]

COMMENTARY PEARL

Solomon had tried it all. He was the
hedonist extraordinaire, seeking pleasure at all
costs. He went on unbelievable drinking binges and
chased after women like there was no tomorrow.
At the same time, he was highly educated.
An architectural genius, he masterminded the
building of incredible structures. And by todays
standards, he was worth billions of dollars. Yet
Solomon asked the same questions that many people
are asking today.
Solomon wrote the Old Testament book of
Ecclesiastes, and the first few verses introduce its
theme: These are the words of the Teacher, King
Davids son, who ruled in Jerusalem. Everything
is meaningless, says the Teacher,
completely meaningless! What do people get for all
their hard work under the sun? (1:1"3 NLT).
Right away we know the writer is Solomon
because he identified himself as King Davids
son. Solomon was raised in a godly home. And
though Davids sins were infamous, the Bible also
describes him as a man after Gods own heart (see 1
Samuel 13:14).
Despite his failures, David indeed was a
man of God, and he wanted his son to walk with
the Lord. Yet Solomon, like many young people,
went on a search for himself. He went on a quest
for the meaning of life.
However, we dont have to wait for the
last chapter of Solomons book to find out what
his answer was. He brought it front and center
in the beginning and went on to explain why and
how he came to his conclusion.
In Ecclesiastes 1:2 he basically summed
up what he discovered on his great search:
Everything is meaningless, . . . completely
meaningless!
The teacher is telling us there is
nothing on this earth that will satisfy us
completely. That is because God has designed us, has
wired us, to know Him. [Greg Laurie from Harvest

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Rest in Me, My child, forgetting about
the worries of the world. Focus on
Me--Immanuel--and let My living Presence envelop you in Peace.
Tune in to My eternal security, for I am the same
yesterday, today, and forever. If you live on the
surface of life by focusing on ever-changing
phenomena, you will find yourself echoing the words of
Solomon: "Meaningless! Meaningless! Everything is
meaningless!"
Living in collaboration with Me is the
way to instill meaning into your days. Begin
each day alone with Me, so that you can
experience the reality of My Presence. As you spend
time with Me, the way before you opens up step by
step. Arise from the stillness of our communion,
and gradually begin your journey through the
day. Hold My hand in deliberate dependence on Me,
and I will smooth out the path before you. (Heb.
13:8; Ecc. 1:2; Pro. 3:6) [Jesus Calling by Sarah
Young]
