John 8:12 - The Second I AM; Jesus the Light of the World!
John 8:12 (NLT) Jesus spoke to the people
once more and said, I am the light of the
world. If you follow me, you wont have to walk
in darkness, because you will have the light
that leads to life.
INTRODUCTION
Twenty-three times in all we find our
Lord's meaningful "I AM" in the Greek text of this
Gospel 4:26; 6:20, 35, 41, 48, 51; 8:12, 18, 24,
28, 58; 10:7, 9, 11, 14; 11:25; 13:19; 14:6;
15:1, 5; 18:5, 6, 8). In several of these, He
joins His "I AM" with seven tremendous metaphors
which are expressive of His saving relationship
toward the world.
"I AM the Bread of life" (6:35, 41, 48,
51).
"I AM the Light of the world" (8:12).
"I AM the Door of the sheep" (10:7, 9).
"I AM the Good Shepherd" (10:11, 14).
"I AM the Resurrection and the Life"
(11:25).
"I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life"
(14:6).
"I AM the true Vine" (15:1, 5).

COMMENTARY PEARL
Engine trouble on our sailboat caused
unexpected delays. My husband and I arrived at the
mouth of the Fraser River as the wind was calm and
the sun was setting. At dusk, we motored
upriver. It was nearly impossible to see hazards in
the water, but we had to keep going so we could
find a place to moor.
I pulled out our big light. Gene steered
the sailboat while I stood on the deck holding a
three-thousand-lumen spotlight (equivalent to the light of three
thousand candles). Steel navigational buoys located
fourteen hundred feet apart dotted the length of that
section of the river, marking the lanes in which
incoming and outgoing vessels traveled. Colliding
with one could seriously damage a hull, which is
the body of the boat. My task was to find these
markers and shine the light on them so Gene could
steer away from them. Trying to navigate the river
without that light would have been treacherous,
foolish, and nearly impossible.
Jesus knew that navigating life
successfully in spiritual darkness was impossible for
mankind. He loved us so much that He came to earth
and died for us (John 3:16). He revealed Himself
as the light of life (John 1: 4). He unveiled
the enemys tactics and lies so we could steer
clear of them (James 4:7). I cant imagine
navigating life apart from the light of Jesus any more
than I can motor safely upriver in the dark.

COMMENTARY
As the Light of the world, Christ claimed to
be God, for God is light (1 John 1:5). [Wiersbe
Expository Outlines]
I am the light of the world - The fountain
whence all intellectual light and spiritual
understanding proceed: without me all is darkness, misery,
and death. (Adam Clarke Commentary)
As the sun is the physical light of the
world, so Jesus is the spiritual light of the
world. As the light of the world, Jesus exposes sin
(vv. 1"11) and gives sight (9:1"7). [Nelson

Christ is the "LIGHT, which LIGHTETH every
man that cometh into the world." John 1:9. As
through Christ every human being has life, so also
through Him every soul receives some ray of divine
LIGHT. Not only intellectual but spiritual power, a
perception of right, a desire for goodness, exists in
every heart. But against these principles there is
struggling an antagonistic power. The result of the
eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is
manifest in every man's experience. There is in his
nature a bent to evil, a force which, unaided, he
cannot resist. To withstand this force, to attain
that ideal which in his inmost soul he accepts as
alone worthy, he can find help in but one power.
That power is Christ. Co-operation with that
power is man's greatest need. ED29
