Luke 6:45 - What You Say Flows From What Is In Your Heart.
Luke 6:45 (NLT) A good person produces good
things from the treasury of a good heart, and an
evil person produces evil things from the
treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from
what is in your heart.
INTRODUCTION
Jesus reminds us that our speech and actions
reveal our true underlying beliefs, attitudes, and
motivations. The good impressions we try to make cannot
last if we are being deceptive. What is in your
heart will come out in your speech and behavior.

COMMENTARY PEARL
My sister Jenny and I often talk on the
phone. Even though we both live stateside, we greet
each other in French. Jenny asks, "Comment ca
va?" (How is it going?) I respond, "Comme ci
comme ca." (So-so.) This makes Jenny laugh. Jenny
spoke French while living abroad for five years. I
spoke French for one year in high school. Even
though Jenny is more fluent, I like pulling out
some good French words like fatigue (pronounced
fa-tee-gay), which means tired, and dsol (pronounced
deh-soh-lay), which means sad. I like the way they roll
off the tongue.
Whether speaking in English or French,
Jenny is always upbeat when we talk. She uses her
words to encourage me. Her heart, the wellspring
of her words, is full of hope, love, and
kindness. Just talking to my sister always makes me
feel better.
Jesus wants me to use my words for good
too. But what I say echoes the state of my heart.
Am I encouraging and honest when I speak?
Loyal? Kind? Or anxious and bitter? Jesus is
working on my heart, healing me with His grace. I
want His words of mercy and love to leave my lips
and encourage those around me, no matter what
language I speak. Susanna Foth Aughtmon
Faith Step: Listen to the words that you
say today. Are they kind? Honest? Uplifting? Ask
Jesus to work on your heart so that your language
encourages those around you. [Mornings With Jesus 2023

ILLUSTRATION
Tip over a glass full of water, and water
spills out. Why? Because that's what was inside the
glass. Whatever fills the glass is what comes out
of it when it is tipped over. The same is true
of the human heart. Jesus said that our mouths
speak out of the fullness of our hearts. When
circumstances or people bump into a heart full of love,
love spills out. But bump a heart full of anger,
and anger spills out. Missionary Amy Carmichael
said, "A cup brimful of sweet water cannot spill
even one drop of bitter water, however suddenly
jolted." If we want to know what is in our heart, all
we have to do is look closely at the speech
that flows from within us. [NIV Once A Day
