Luke 5:5 - Blessings in Obedience.
Luke 5:5 (NKJV) But Simon answered and said
to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and
caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will
let down the net."
Luke 5:5 (NIV) Simon answered, "Master,
we've worked hard all night and haven't caught
anything. But because you say so, I will let down the
nets."
COMMENTARY PEARL
"Because I said so." If I had a dollar
for every time I've uttered that nonnegotiable
statement as a parent, my children's college savings
would have been fully funded. A debate always
preceded my frustrated declaration, my daughters
arguing their side and me arguing mine, until we
reached an impasse and I made that final,
authoritative announcement.
"Because I said so" could mean two
things: No, you can't do what you want. Or, yes, you
have to do what I want you to do.
When my quiet time took me to Luke 5 this
morning, Simon's response to Jesus reminded me of the
well-worn phrase from my parenting days. Exhausted
after a failed night of fishing, Simon did not
want to cast his nets one more time as Jesus
instructed. But instead of arguing, he replied, "Because
You say so."
Similar to my voice, I hear Simon's
weariness. But our statements, which also sound
similar, are vastly different. "Because I said so" is
a response to disobedience. "Because You say
so" is a response of obedience. I don't want to
do what You're asking of me, Lord, but I will
do it anyway. Because You say so.
When my heart feels resistant, Simon's
words, now written on the whiteboard in my office,
will be my reminder to tell Jesus, "Because You
say so." Karen Sargent
Faith Step: Have you been arguing with
Jesus about something He wants you to do or not to
do? Write "Because You say so" on a note card
and place it where you will see it often. When
Jesus asks, do it. [Mornings With Jesus 2024
