Romans 15:13 - Hope, Joy and Peace are in a Relationship with Jesus.
Romans 15:13 (NLT) I pray that God, the
source of hope, will fill you completely with joy
and peace because you trust in him. Then you
will overflow with confident hope through the
power of the Holy Spirit.
INTRODUCTION
Paul prays that their faith may give them a
life full of joy and peace and hope, which are
all the results of true faith and of the
presence of the Holy Spirit. [SDA Bible Commentary]
Paul again prays for the believers (as in
15:5). This time Paul prays that the God who gives
hope will give them joy (as they anticipate what
God has in store for them) and peace (as they
rest in the assurance that God will do as he has
promised). Then, the believers can overflow with hope
by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is by the
power of the Holy Spirit that God accomplishes his
care for his people - giving them endurance,
encouragement, unity (15:5), hope, joy, and peace. Hope
comes as a by-product of the Holy Spirit's work.
It does not come from our own senses or
experiences. [Life Application Commentary]
COMMENTARY PEARLS
God Of Hope
Our God is the God of hope. But what is
hope? Hope is the breath of nature that surrounds
us every day.
Hope is seen in a sprig that shoots up
from the crevasse of a sun-dried rock, proving
the water of life within.
Hope is the first ray of sunshine that
peeks above the horizon - without fail - every
morning with blazing truth, telling us we can make
it through.
Hope is dispatched when the moon rises in
the dark night, foreshadowing that a new day
will dawn.
Have you glimpsed the glow of hope?
Strike a match and burn a candle. You will discover
that the whisper of its flame brings life to a
room, making the candle useful. Is your flame
alive and making a difference in the world? You
see, hope pierces the darkness.
Hope brings comfort to our aching souls.
It perseveres, persuades, prevails. And it is
God's gift to us.
How have you offered a glimpse of God's
hope to another person? [Peace for Each Day by
Billy Graham]
School of Hope
When multimillionaire businessman Eugene
Lang was asked to speak for a grade school
graduation in Harlem, he knew that nearly half of this
demographic was expected to drop out of high school. So,
on a whim, he announced to the 61 students that
hed provide a college scholarship for each
student who graduated from high school. He even set
up a foundation to provide mentoring. As a
result, more than 70 percent of the class graduated
and half enrolled in college.
In that poverty-stricken neighborhood,
most families viewed higher education as a pipe
dream. But with his single promise, Lang gave those
kids the catalyst needed to drastically change
their lives: hope. He showed them that the
seemingly impossible was possible. Imagine the
transformation those students underwent. They must have
looked at everything differently, every little
chore they did, every piece of homework they
completed.
How much more hope do we as Christians
have? We have the promise of salvation from "the
God of hope. God, knowing that the sinful
human race was expected to die the eternal death,
gave us the greatest incentive - a scholarship to
eternal life penned by Jesus Christ. Through the
Holy Spirit, we can have daily mentoring,
transforming our characters into those fit for heaven.
Our graduation day, when we enter the
heavenly kingdom, is yet future. But if you choose to
take God at His word, you will not fail. Instead,
you'll find your hope growing more each day until
it is overflowing with "joy and peace. If
you decide to accept God's free offer, just as
many of those students accepted Lang's, your
future will be secure.
Dear Lord, teach me to hope in Your
promises and to experience the peace and joy that
comes from believing in You. [The Most Amazing
