Isaiah 54:13 - The Teacher.
Isaiah 54:13 (NKJV) All your children shall
be taught by the LORD, And great shall be the
peace of your children.
Isaiah 54:13 (ESV) All your children shall
be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the
peace of your children.
INTRODUCTION
54:1"17 A covenant of peace. This chapter
uses moving language to depict the relationship
between God and His people. The Lord is Creator,
Redeemer, Husband, and Teacher. He is One who shows
everlasting love or kindness and mercy, who is in a
covenant of peace that cannot be removed. He is the
protector of His people so much so that no weapon
formed against [them] shall prosper (v. 17).

When he started the second grade, Jamil
Jan Kochai, an Afghani immigrant, knew ten
letters of the English alphabet. Realizing his
struggles, his new teacher, Mrs. Lung, began tutoring
him every day after school. By the year's end,
Jamil could read and write. And years later, Jamil
became an acclaimed, award-winning author, an
accomplishment he largely attributes to the dedication and
care of his second-grade teacher.
The promise in today's verse is for all
who have chosen to enter into God's covenant
relationship: "As many as are led by the Spirit of God,
these are sons of God" (Romans 8:14). God has
chosen you to be His adopted children (v. 15). And
every child of God is promised the privilege of
being taught by Him. As Christ told His disciples,
"The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father
will send in My name, He will teach you all
things" (John 14:26) and "will guide you into all
truth" (16:13). And the apostle Paul elucidated,
"The Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep
things of God:' and then "[reveals] them to us" (1
Corinthians 2:10).
After explaining why He would send the
Holy Spirit, Christ immediately said, "Peace I
leave with you, My peace I give to you" (John
14:27). The peace that Christ left was the Holy
Spirit; the Holy Spirit was Christ's gift to us.
Thus, we are also promised that following the
teachings of the Holy Spirit, and submitting to His
promptings, will result in peace "not as the world
gives but as only a Father of love would give to
His children.

COMMENTARY
Recently two of my daughters moved up
from elementary school to middle school, and our
church didn't have a Sunday school class for their
age group. As I heard about the need for a
teacher, something stirred within my heart. Should
this be something I consider? I wondered.
Then, during my Bible reading, I was
reminded of the peace that comes to children when
time is taken to teach them in the ways of the
Lord. How would those middle school youth know
about Jesus if someone didn't step up to teach
them?
I find it's easy to read a Scripture
passage and allow it to make me feel warm and fuzzy,
but opening my heart to teaching others has me
worried. What if those I am teaching have questions
and I don't have answers? What if I have to give
up other activities that I enjoy to fulfill my
commitment to them?
I remembered that Jesus doesn't ask me to
do things perfectly. He only asks me to be
willing and faithful. I often get so focused on the
proper Bible lessons that I forget the whole point,
which is to share about Jesus and bring others to
know Him. Instruction is an avenue to help me
connect my heart to His and to others. Lesson
learned!
I finally said yes to teaching middle
schoolers in Sunday school - who knows, I may just
learn something myself. Tricia Gayer
