John 15:3 - The Cleansing Power of God's Word.
John 15:3 (NIV) You are already clean
because of the word I have spoken to you.
John 15:3 (NLT) You have already been pruned
and purified by the message I have given you.
INTRODUCTION
Jesus makes a distinction between two kinds
of pruning: (1) cutting off and (2) cutting
back branches. Fruitful branches are cut back to
promote growth. In other words, God must sometimes
discipline us to strengthen our character and faith.
But branches that don't bear fruit are cut off
at the trunk not only because they are
worthless but also because they often infect the rest
of the tree. People who don't bear fruit for
God or who try to block the efforts of God's
followers will be cut off from his life-giving power.

COMMENTARY PEARL
The more a grapevine is pruned, the more
grapes will be produced and the better they will
taste. When a grapevine goes dormant in winter, it
is time to trim off old branches and any
leftover fruit. New branches will then form, and from
this an abundant harvest will be reaped.
In John chapter 15, Jesus uses the
grapevine to teach us about the Christian life. Christ
represents Himself as the vine; when we receive Him, we
become as the branches on that vine. However, for
us to yield fruit, there must be a continual
pruning of the old ways, which leads to new growth
in the Spirit.
The Father is represented as the
husbandman who does the cutting by His Word. It is in
this sense that Jesus says, "You are already
clean, because we have been pruned by the Word when
we are born again. We cannot purge ourselves of
sin, but God sends His Word so that its power
might do the pruning we desperately need. Then, as
we abide in Jesus through obedience to His
Word, His life flows through us, producing "the
fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22).
Is your life producing fruit that
glorifies God, or are you being drained by the sin
that is clinging to you? God promises that,
through His Word, you can be clean and free to grow
in Christ. Submit to His pruning, and you will
experience an abundant harvest!
Father, thank You for the love You show
me in my fallen state, and for Your efforts to
save me from sin. Help me to appreciate Your gift
and trust You more each day. [The Most Amazing
