Philippians 3:20 - Live As Your Citizenship Is In Heaven.
Philippians 3:20 (NIV) But our citizenship
is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior
from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
INTRODUCTION
The Christian needs a constant awareness of
the fact that he is a citizen of heaven.
Attachment to ones country leads him to be loyal to
it. Wherever he may be living he will conduct
himself in a way that will honor the good name of
his country. Keeping in mind the kind of life we
expect to live in heaven, serves to guide us in our
life on earth. The purity, humility, gentleness,
and love we anticipate experiencing in the life
to come may be demonstrated here below. Our
actions should disclose that we are citizens of
heaven. Our association with others should make
heaven attractive to them Those who eagerly
await His coming will desire to prepare for that
event (cf. on 1 John 1:3). They will feel that
earthly affairs are of little importance, since the
scenes of this earth will soon close. They will
live above the world, constantly desiring the
Lords appearing. [SDA Bible Commentary]
COMMENTARY PEARL
I became a naturalized American citizen
in 1996. To become a citizen, I completed two
important steps. First, I studied for and passed a
forty-question multiple-choice test about American history
and government. Second, after successfully
passing the examination, I attended an event to be
sworn in as a new citizen. During this oath-taking
ceremony, I renounced any allegiance to a foreign
country (in my case, the Philippines) and promised
to always defend the government of the United
States.
Years ago, as a young teenager, I became
a born-again Christian. After confessing Jesus
as my Lord and Savior, I acquired a new
citizenship - a heavenly citizenship. I cannot help but
see a similarity between the steps I took to
become an American citizen and the steps I take to
be a responsible citizen of heaven.
I must diligently study Jesus's Words to
learn about Him and the history of God's people,
as well as understand and obey His laws and
commands.
As a Christian, I have also had to give
up any sinful habits that are not in conformity
with the nature of Jesus. To continually engage
in a sinful practice is like maintaining
allegiance with my old world. But that's not what I
want anymore - I want my lifestyle, actions, and
words to truly reflect my loyalty to Jesus. Though
I live in this world, I can be encouraged by
remembering that my true home - my real citizenship -
lies with Jesus and His heavenly kingdom.
