COMMENTARY PEARL
Another Existence
Kurt Gdel was a Czech logician whose
reason led him to believe in an afterlife. He
taught that science shows how much order there is
in this life, which always ends before we can
accomplish even "1/1,000" of our potential; therefore,
there must be "another existence."
Whatever one thinks of Gdel's
reasoning, his point of "another existence" after this
one is certainly true - though not until the
resurrection. The biblical term for this is "salvation."
In our promise today, Jesus assures us of
that salvation. Don't fear, He says, which itself
is comforting. Then He calls us His "little
flock," a term of endearment spoken by the Good
Shepherd (John 10:11). Finally, Jesus says that it's
the Father's pleasure, His desire, to give us
the kingdom that will last forever (Daniel
7:27). How much more assurance do we need?
The Bible says that all of us are
sinners. And we know that only too well, don't we?
Which is why it is so easy to doubt our own
salvation. Yet we must not allow the enemy of our souls
to make us think that our case is hopeless.
Indeed, it is hopeless only without Jesus.
That's why you must focus on what Jesus
has done for you at the cross - and not on your
mistakes, sins, and character flaws. If you do, you
will eventually give up all hope. Remember this
one point: Your salvation is found in Jesus and
not in yourself. To keep that great truth ever
in mind is the key to the assurance that Jesus
offers us.
Lord Jesus, when I look at myself, I can
only despair. Help me to look at You and what You
have done for me at the cross. [The Most Amazing
