Hebrews 4:12 - Power Greater Than Nuclear.

Hebrews 4:12 (ESV) For the word of God is 
living and active, sharper than any two-edged 
sword, piercing to the division of soul and of 
spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the 
thoughts and intentions of the heart. 

Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) For the word of God is 
alive and powerful. It is sharper than the 
sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and 
spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our 
innermost thoughts and desires.  

INTRODUCTION

The creative energy that called the worlds 
into existence is in the word of God. This word 
imparts power; it begets life. Every command is a 
promise; accepted by the will, received into the 
soul, it brings with it the life of the Infinite 
One. It transforms the nature and re-creates the 
soul in the image of God.  ED 126 

COMMENTARY PEARL

   One of the past century's most amazing 
discoveries is that matter and energy are the same. 
Different forms, yes - but the same. This truth is 
expressed in the formula e=mc2. What it means is that 
an incredible amount of energy exists in 
matter. The energy of a raisin could potentially 
provide a year's worth of electricity for a city! 
   There is also power in the Word of God. 
Look at what today's text says. A sword was the 
premier weapon in antiquity, and it would have to be 
a sharp one, indeed, to divide soul from 
spirit, joints from marrow, and to reach into even 
"the thoughts and intents of the heart:' 
   Who hasn't experienced the power of the 
Word of God? The power to bring conviction? To 
lead to repentance? To confession? But also, who 
hasn't experienced the power of the Word to bring 
comfort? Hope? Assurance? And victory when tempted? 
   It was no coincidence that in the 
wilderness temptations (Luke 4:1-13), each time the 
devil tempted Him, Jesus responded - not with 
debate, not with argument, not with theological 
discussion - but with Scripture, the Word of God. "It 
is written," He said. And each time He quoted 
the Word of God, the devil backed down. 
   We all face temptation, discouragement, 
and fear. But in the Word of God, we are 
promised power - power to overcome these things and 
more. After all, it is the Word of God, the same 
God whose words spoke our world into existence 
(Genesis 1). Surely, this same Word can sustain you 
in whatever you are facing.

COMMENTARY

   Both the Word of God and prayer are 
indispensable for communion with God, and in the inner 
chamber they should not be separated. In His Word, 
God speaks to us; in prayer, we speak to God. 
   The Word teaches us to know the God to 
whom we pray. It teaches us how He wants us to 
pray. It gives us precious promises to encourage 
us in prayer. It often gives us wonderful 
answers to prayer. 
   The Word comes from God's heart and 
brings His thoughts and His love into our hearts. 
And then, through prayer, the Word goes back 
from our hearts into His great heart of love. 
Prayer is the means of fellowship between God's 
heart and ours. 
   The Word teaches us God's will - the will 
of His promises as to what He will do for us, 
and also the will of His commands. His promises 
are food for our faith, and to His commands we 
surrender ourselves in loving obedience. 
   The more we pray, the more we will feel 
our need for the Word and will rejoice in it. 
The more we read God's Word, the more we will 
have to pray about, and the more power we will 
have in prayer. One great cause of prayerlessness 
is that we read God's Word too little, only 
superficially, or in the light of human wisdom. 
   The Holy Spirit, through whom the Word 
has been spoken, is also the Spirit of prayer. 
He will teach us how to receive the Word and 
how to approach God. 
   When we take God's Word in deepest 
reverence in our hearts, on our lips, and in our 
lives, it will be a never failing fountain of 
strength and blessing to us. Let us believe that 
God's Word is indeed full of power that will make 
us strong, able to expect and receive great 
things from God. Above all, it will give us the 
daily blessed fellowship with Him as the living 
God.
