Exodus 20:8-11 - The Seventh Day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God.
Exodus 20:8-11 (NKJV) Remember the Sabbath
day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor
and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is
the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you
shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your
daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female
servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is
within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made
the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that
is in them, and rested the seventh day.
Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and
hallowed it.
Exodus 20:8-11 (NIV) Remember the Sabbath
day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall
labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day
is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you
shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son
or daughter, nor your manservant or
maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your
gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens
and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them,
but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the
LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Exodus 20:8-11 (NLT) Remember to observe the
Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 You have six days
each week for your ordinary work, 10 but the
seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to
the LORD your God. On that day no one in your
household may do any work. This includes you, your
sons and daughters, your male and female
servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living
among you. 11 For in six days the LORD made the
heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them;
but on the seventh day he rested. That is why
the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it
apart as holy.

COMMENTARY PEARL
The Seven-Day Cycle
The nepreryvka was an 11-year experiment
that failed on every level. Implemented in 1929
by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, the
"continuous work week" was a five-day cycle - four days
of work and one day of rest - during which five
work groups were each assigned a different rest
day. Eighty percent of the workforce kept the
machines running daily. The staggered rest days,
however, separated family members and friends.
Whenever men try to restructure something
that God has built, their revision quickly
collapses. God implemented the seven-day cycle at
Creation, setting apart the seventh day as sacred
(Genesis 2:2). Because He "blessed the Sabbath day"
(emphasis added), we receive a blessing when we, by
His grace, "keep it holy." Thus, the fourth
commandment contains a hidden promise.
The promised blessing includes more than
physical rejuvenation. The reason we rest from our
six days of work is to focus on God's six days
of work in which "He made the heavens and the
earth, the sea, and all that is in them." As we
dwell upon His power to create life (Genesis
1:11-30) and to sustain it (2:9), we cannot help but
be spiritually refreshed.
Are you spiritually exhausted? "The
Sabbath was made for [you]" (Mark 2:27) as a
reminder that God can recreate and sustain you
(Ezekiel 20:12). Will you enter His rest (Hebrews
4:10) on the Sabbath day?
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me
one day to dwell upon Your creative power. Help
me to rest from my own works on Your holy day.

COMMENTARY
The question is sometimes asked; that since
the calendar has been through so many changes do
we really know which day is the 7th day? The
answer to that question is an easy one. The Jews
date back to when God gave the Ten Commandments
on Mt Sinai and have kept that day ever since
including through all the calendar changes. It's
interesting to note that the Ten Commandments were the
only part of the Bible written by God's finger in
stone on Mt. Sinai. Gibbs
The Jewish Sabbath (from Hebrew shavat,
to rest) is observed throughout the year on
the seventh day of the week - Saturday.
