Matthew 6:34 - Live for Jesus One Day at a Time.

Matthew 6:34 (NLT) Don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.

Matthew 6:34 (MSG) Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don 't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

INTRODUCTION

Careful planning can keep us from worry. We need to keep things in proper perspective. Planning for tomorrow is time well spent; worrying about tomorrow is time wasted. Sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference. Careful planning is thinking ahead about goals, steps, and schedules, and trusting in God's guidance. When done well, planning can help alleviate worry. Worrying, in contrast, is being consumed by fear and finding it difficult to trust God. It is letting our plans interfere with our relationship with God. Don't let worries about tomorrow affect your relationship with God today. [Life Application SB]

COMMENTARY PEARL

After leaving the drugstore, I sat in my car, preoccupied with worry over a troubling situation. A tap on my window startled me. A thin woman in a tattered gold sweater motioned for me to lower the glass. She'd just gotten out of the hospital and didn't have food or a place to stay. I gave her all the cash in my billfold and told her I hoped things would get better.
Unexpectedly, she burst into song: "One day at a time, sweet Jesus; that's all I'm asking of You..."
Her voice was deep and mellow. The message was one I needed to hear.
Curious about the origin of the song, I researched it. In 1973, Nashville songwriter Marijohn Wilkin drove a Cadillac and wore a fur coat, but she was miserable. Struggling with addiction, she drove to a church. After confessing her problems to a pastor, she went home and sat at her piano. The words of the song "One Day at a Time" flowed out of her. Later, she reflected that the lyrics were a cry for help. Who better to turn to than Jesus?
I considered how much the homeless woman and I had in common. She had almost nothing and I had nearly everything, but we both needed to let Jesus take care of us one day at a time. Pat Butler Dyson

COMMENTARY

Worry is blind and cannot discern the future; but Jesus sees the end from the beginning. In every difficulty He has His way prepared to bring relief. "No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly." Matthew 11:30; Psalm 84:11.
Our heavenly Father has a thousand ways to provide for us of which we know nothing. Those who accept the one principle of making the service of God supreme, will find perplexities vanish and a plain path before their feet.
The faithful discharge of today's duties is the best preparation for tomorrow's trials. Do not gather together all tomorrow's liabilities and cares and add them to the burden of today. "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." Matthew 6:34. MH481

Plan for Tomorrow but Live for Today
There are two days you should never worry about: yesterday and tomorrow.
Jesus said, "Don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will have its own worries. Each day has enough trouble of its own" (Matthew 6:34 NCV).
You can't live in the past. You can't live in the future. You can only live today.
Why should you only live one day at a time? First, when you worry about tomorrow's problems, you miss the blessings of today. Second, you cannot solve tomorrow's problems with today's power. When tomorrow arrives, God will give you the power, perspective, grace, and wisdom you need.
When I was a kid, I didn't worry about anything I needed in my life. Instead, I just went to my dad or mom and told them what I needed. I was never once concerned about how they were going to meet our needs because they took on that responsibility.
God wants you to be the same way with him.
Matthew 6:30 says, "If God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won't he more surely care for you?" (TLB)
When you worry, you assume responsibility that God never intended for you to have. You may be worrying today about a lot of things that are really God's responsibility. In fact, every time you worry, it's a warning that you're playing God and that you believe it all depends on you. You're acting like you don't have a heavenly Father who will feed and lead and meet your needs.
The Bible does not say, "Give us this day our weekly bread." It says, "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11 ESV).
God wants you to depend on him one day at a time. He will provide everything you need - for today. Because he is a good God, you can trust that you will lack nothing.
It's okay to plan for tomorrow. But don't worry about it! Trust God for each day as it comes. [Daily Devotional by Rick Warren: https://pastorrick.com/devotional/]

ONE LINERS

We are to make Him [Jesus] first and last and best in everything. We are to engage in no business, follow no pursuit, seek no pleasure, that would hinder the outworking of His righteousness in our character and life. Whatever we do is to be done heartily, as unto the Lord... If we follow His example, His assurance to us is that all things needful in this life "shall be added." {MB 99}

If you will seek the Lord and be converted every day ... all your murmurings will be stilled, all your difficulties will be removed, all the perplexing problems that now confront you will be solved.  MB101
