Philippians 2:9-11 - JESUS - The Name Above Every Name.Philippians 2:9-11 (NLT) Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.CONTEXT AND INTRODUCTION Philippians 2:6-11, often called the Christ Hymn, reveals early Christian beliefs about the nature of Jesus Christ. This hymn affirms that the early Christians believed that Christ was divine and existed before God created the world (John 1:1-2; Colossians 1:15-20; 2:9; Hebrews 1:1-3). Christ is not simply another human prophet. He was present with God the Father from the very beginning, and he is the one through whom the universe was created. As the Son of God, he shares the nature of God himself. The hymn also affirms that Jesus Christ came to earth in an act of immense humility - the infinite God became human (John 1:10-14; Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 2:14,17). Jesus Christ, the glorious Creator of the universe, died as a sacrificial offering for the sins of human beings so that we might be forgiven and be reconciled to God, as the Scriptures had foretold (Isaiah 53:3-12; Colossians 1:20, 22; 2:13-14; Hebrews 10:12). This hymn also affirms that God raised Jesus from the dead, has given him "the place of highest honor" in heaven, and conferred on him the title "Lord." One day, all created beings will bow before him and acknowledge that he is Lord of the entire universe, deserving of the worship that God alone is worthy to receive (Revelation 5:8-14). [One Year NLT SB] COMMENTARY PEARL I woke up knowing it would be a difficult day. For many hours, I would be in a room with people who are sometimes hard to love, and I wasn't sure how I would handle the situation. The group was known for being unruly, immature, vulgar, and disrespectful - on their good days. I knew I couldn't manage without Jesus's help. I arrived early and spent time praying over the room where we would gather. I spoke the name of Jesus aloud several times, hopeful His presence would calm attitudes, diffuse anger, and pacify dissension. Then I waited. At the end of the day, however, I drove home disappointed. I couldn't understand why nothing had changed in the words or actions of the group when I had specifically called on the name of Jesus for help. Wasn't He listening? It wasn't long before Jesus, in His mercy, showed me where I had erred in my expectations. I had used the name of Jesus as if it were the name of a genie, ready to grant my wishes and meet my demands. Not once had I spoken His name as a declaration of His preeminence in my life. I had asked Jesus to change the hearts of others when I should have asked Him to change my own. Emily E. Ryan Faith Step: As you pray today, speak the name of Jesus out loud to acknowledge His place as Lord in your life. [Mornings With Jesus 2024 Devotional by Guideposts and Zondervan] COMMENTARY Philippians 2:6-11, often called the Christ Hymn, is about Christ's preexistence and divine nature, incarnation and death, exaltation and lordship. NLTSB Jesus Christ is Lord of all. And that's because He is the Creator of all: "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made" (John 1:3). Thus, He is Lord of every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. Though not everyone currently recognizes Him as Lord, the day is coming when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. [Adult SS Quarterly 6/25/05] The Names of Christ The Bible ascribes many different names to Jesus, all of which provide great insight into His character and person. Here are some from John's gospel that I find particularly revealing: The Good Shepherd (10:11) protects his sheep at all cost from predators. They know His voice and follow Him. The Door (vv. 7-9) is the only way to enter heaven. Whoever enters through the "gate" of Christ will be saved. The Vine (15:1-10) is the source of our spiritual life. When we stay intimately connected to Jesus, we bear fruit. If we do not remain in Him, we wither. The Bread of Life (6:25-35) the only one who can truly satisfy our hearts. Jesus feeds our souls with sustenance that never leaves us wanting for more. The Light of the World (9:5) shines His light through our countenance as a ministry and testimony to a dark world. The Way (14:6) to happiness, peace, joy, and eternal life is Jesus Christ. The Truth (14:6) of His revelation, as recorded in the New Testament, is the reason we can know as much as we do about God. The Life (14:6) Jesus imparts to believers is powerful, effective, and fruitful, not only in eternity but here on earth as well. In biblical times, Israelites would choose a baby's name based on the child's characteristics or a hope or prayer of the parent. The names given to Jesus tell a great deal about His ministry on earth 2,000 years ago. The scriptural names describing Him reveal who He was and is and will be for eternity.
