COMMENTARY PEARL

Healing Poison
From its leaves and seeds to its bark, every part of the yew tree is poisonous. History records that Boudicca, a Celtic warrior queen, died from ingesting its leaves rather than be captured by the Romans. But in the 1960s, researchers discovered that a compound derived from the toxic bark of the Pacific Yew could successfully treat cancer. Poison became medicine.
At first glance, suffering seems like poison. It hurts. Traumatic experiences can cause depression or lead people into addictions. People rightly seek to avoid suffering, just like poison. But in God's creative hands, suffering becomes something else entirely.
God promises that "all things," even suffering, "work together for good." The text does not say that all things are good. Rather, God takes bad and senseless things and works them together to create good. He redeems them for His glory.
God has a thousand ways to bring good out of suffering. He may bring a good experience from a bad one, or He may use your suffering to aid in someone else's salvation. But the primary good He intends concerns your character. The Creator works this miracle for those who love Him, and God has a particular purpose in calling His people. He plans that these individuals will be "conformed to the image of His Son" (Romans 8:29). God wants to transform you to be like Jesus - and suffering can play a part in that transformation. For example, it may grow your hatred of sin, create a longing for righteousness, or deepen your empathy.
Are you encountering difficult circumstances? God has a plan to redeem your situation and your character. The Creator God can work even this for good.
Dear God, I don't like suffering, but I long for Your character. Please work all things for good in my life and heart. [The Most Amazing Bible Promises by Amazing Facts]
