Isaiah 9:6 - Gift of All Gifts; For Unto Us A Son Is Given.

Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

INTRODUCTION

In a time of great darkness, God promised to send a light who would shine on everyone living in the shadow of death. He is both "Wonderful Counselor" and "Mighty God." This message of hope was fulfilled in the birth of Christ and the establishment of his eternal Kingdom. He came to deliver all people from their slavery to sin. [Life Application SB]

COMMENTARY PEARL

Lately I've been noticing how part of my brain remains alert for the sound of my name in a roomful of people. It's as if I have an antenna tuned to the "Suzanne" frequency. I probably learned to listen for my name as a child because I got in trouble if I didn't come when I was called.
I was called Suzi as a child, but I don't hear that much anymore. Only my husband, Mike, and close family members who live far away call me by that name. Now that I've been ruminating on this, I've realized that Mike rarely calls me Suzi or Suzanne. Since I'm lost in thought much of the time, not hearing my name means I miss the first few words of anything he tries to tell me.
As a nurse, I learned that something happens physically when we hear our name. As early as the first year of life, functional MRI studies show that certain areas in the brain react or light up and hormones are released when we hear our name spoken. Ironically, this happens even when a person is sedated or sound asleep.
Jesus would have experienced this too. He lived in a human body and would have heard Himself called "Yeshua," the Hebrew word for Jesus. It was the name His parents obediently gave Him when an angel appeared to Joseph (Matthew 1:21). But long before Jesus's birth, scripture recounts Jesus's many names: Messiah, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
But I call Him my Savior. Suzanne Davenport Tietjen
