COMMENTARY PEARL "Look at all the stuff I got this year," my eight-year-old grandson, Reed, says gleefully as he surveys the brightly wrapped boxes and gift bags of all sizes that surround him. On this Christmas morning, he is beside himself with excitement as he tears off wrapping paper and ribbon while our family watches with amusement. Reed's mom tells him to first announce who gave him the gift before he opens it. But he's so consumed with finding out what's inside that he forgets to say who it's from. She further directs Reed to take a moment to thank the giver before moving on to the next present - instructions she must repeat more than once. It's a hard lesson in gratitude for a kid who just wants to get his loot as fast as he can so he can play to his heart's content. The exchange between Reed and our daughter makes me think about how many times I've failed to pause and thank God for each of the amazing gifts He has given me in my life - family, friends, His Word, and the freedom to worship. But the greatest gift of all is Jesus, who came to change the course of humankind and offer salvation from our sins. Might I greet Him this day with the same excitement as a kid on Christmas morning. Barbranda Lumpkins Walls Faith Step: What wonderful gifts have you received from Jesus? Take a moment to name them and thank Him with childlike exuberance for each one. [Mornings With Jesus 2024 Devotional by Guideposts and Zondervan] COMMENTARY Sometimes praise comes easily, and sometimes it is a choice. When we struggle to see the goodness of God beyond the struggles of life, it is an act of courage to give thanks to the Lord. His nature is unchanging. He is always full of unfailing mercy. He is always good, even when we cannot understand his ways. The Word tells us that the steadfast love of God never ends, and his mercies never cease (Lamentations 3:22). There is fresh mercy every morning, every moment, in fact. There is more than enough help in the presence of our Good Father to face whatever comes. Let's turn our attention to his unchanging mercy, his indescribable goodness, and his faithfulness. "Though I am surrounded by troubles ... you reach out your hand, and the power of your right hand saves me" (Psalm 138:7). Whether in times of comfort or conflict, the Lord remains the same in love. When you struggle to turn your attention to praise, read Psalm 138.
