1 Corinthians 10:13 - Temptation Comes with Limits and a Way of Escape.1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV) No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. INTRODUCTION Paul gives the Corinthians a final warning against falling into sin and reminds them that God is faithful. God will not allow them to be tempted or tested beyond their ability to endure, but will always provide a way out. [NLT SB 2008] COMMENTARY PEARLS The only safeguard against evil is the indwelling of Christ in the heart through faith in His righteousness. It is because selfishness exists in our hearts that temptation has power over us. But when we behold the great love of God, selfishness appears to us in its hideous and repulsive character, and we desire to have it expelled from the soul. As the Holy Spirit glorifies Christ, our hearts are softened and subdued, the temptation loses its power, and the grace of Christ transforms the character. [MB118] All true obedience comes from the heart. It was heart work with Christ. And if we consent, He will so identify Himself with our thoughts and aims, so blend our hearts and minds into conformity to His will, that when obeying Him we shall be but carrying out our own impulses. The will, refined and sanctified, will find its highest delight in doing His service. When we know God as it is our privilege to know Him, our life will be a life of continual obedience. Through an appreciation of the character of Christ, through communion with God, sin will become hateful to us. As Christ lived the law in humanity, so we may do if we will take hold of the Strong for strength. [DA 668] In every difficulty He has His way prepared to bring relief. Our Heavenly Father has a thousand ways to provide for us, of which we know nothing. Those who accept the one principle of making the service and honor of God supreme, will find perplexities vanish, and a plain path before their feet. [DA330] COMMENTARY Jesus is the way of escape based on Phil 4:13 (KJV) which says I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me. Help is just a prayer away. There Is Always A Way Out Slow down for a moment to say these words out loud to God: "Because of Your victory, I can go forward. I'm opening myself up today for You to create lasting change in my heart. By the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, I trust that You will work in me and guide me through every situation I face today." [Phi. 3:10; Eph. 1:19, 20] This is resurrection power at work, and this is how God invites us to victory. Through Jesus' righteousness, we can reject sin and walk free with Him because He has given us a permanent "way out." This is what it means in 1 Corinthians 10:13 when Paul said, "But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." Let that sink in. God. Will. Provide. A. Way. Out. It's a bedrock truth you can build on. A promise to you from God Almighty. Because of this promise, you can live with assurance of victory. You can stand strong against sin and be holy as God is holy. Dear God, You made a way when there was no other way. When I could do nothing on my own, You died for me and gave me new life. [Grace and Glory by Louie Giglio] In The Hiding Place, Corrie ten Boom's book documenting her family's experiences helping Jews escape during World War II, she included an account of her sister Nollie. Nollie, steadfastly obedient to God's Word, would not lie but when directly questioned by the Nazis, outrightly identified Annaliese, the Jewish fugitive she had been harboring. The soldiers arrested both women; Annaliese would be sent to an extermination camp. However, less than a week later, Annaliese was miraculously freed. Nollie fervently believed in God's promise: "Those who honor Me I will honor" (1 Samuel 2:30). She believed that God would help Annaliese to escape because she honored Him by telling the truth (Psalm 141:3). Our verse today says that God has an escape route planned for every temptation. In other words, no matter how dire a situation, no temptation is irresistible. When you think there is no way out except to cave, remember that "God is faithful" He can open doors and break down manmade barriers for all who put their trust in Him. The Bible also states that all temptations are "common to man." The devil works to isolate and discourage - but know that you are not the only one to face these antagonists. Jesus Himself "was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). He combated the devil's temptations with the truth of God's Word (Matthew 4:4). Nollie applied Christ's same method in her desperation - and so can we. God's Word always trumps the devil's traps. Follow it, and you will find the most difficult obstacles now free and clear. Faithful Lord, point me to Your exit door whenever Satan springs his traps of temptation on me.
