Isaiah 35:10 - Sorrow And Sighing Shall Flee Away.

Isaiah 35:10 (NKJV) And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, And come to Zion with singing, With everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, And sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Isaiah 35:10 (NIV) and those the LORD has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Isaiah 35:10 (NLT) Those who have been ransomed by the LORD will return. They will enter Jerusalem singing, crowned with everlasting joy. Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be filled with joy and gladness.

INTRODUCTION

This chapter is a beautiful picture of the final Kingdom, in which God will establish his justice and destroy all evil. This is the world the redeemed can anticipate after the judgment, when creation itself will rejoice in God. Isaiah 34 speaks of great distress when God will judge all people for their actions. Isaiah 35 pictures the days when life will be peaceful at last and everything will be made right.
God is preparing a way for his people (those who walk in his ways) to travel to his home, and he will walk with us. God never stops at simply pointing the way; he always walks beside us as we go. [Life Application SB 2019]

COMMENTARY

Kidnapped and Ransomed
On November 12, 1974, Jack Teich was pulling into his driveway after a long day at the office when two masked men kidnapped him at gunpoint. Jack's wife, Janet, called the police after discovering the empty car. Within 24 hours, the kidnappers called her for a ransom demand: "Pay 0,000, or your husband will be executed." Jack was held chained in a dark closet until Janet delivered the bag of cash.
Today's verse references "the ransomed of the LORD." A dual prophecy, Isaiah 35 is more about the ransomed who return to the heavenly Zion than the earthly one. Undoubtedly, there was much joyful singing when, after 70 years in Babylon, God's people returned to Jerusalem. But that "joy and gladness" was only a shadow of what the ransomed saints will experience as they enter the eternal city of "pure gold" (Revelation 21:17). Their joy will indeed be "everlasting," with no more "sorrow and sighing."
So, who are these eternally ransomed ones? They are we who "escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will" (2 Timothy 2:26). Our escape is possible only because Jesus came "to give His life a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28). The "many" includes anyone who believes, for He "gave Himself a ransom for all" (1 Timothy 2:6).
Do you want to be among the many who "come to ... the heavenly Jerusalem"? (Hebrews 12:22). Jesus paid your ransom so you can escape the devil's snare, which ends in death (James 1:15). You just need to respond to His grace.
Heavenly Father, I'm thankful that You paid the ransom for my soul. I no longer want to be the devil's captive. [The Most Amazing Bible Promises by Amazing Facts]

How does a Christian who is bruised and battered by very deep trials remain tender toward God instead of becoming bitter or cynical? By remembering this: Our God suffered first, and He has suffered more. No other God of any other religion can claim that. It all comes into focus in the person of Jesus. He suffered first, He suffered most, and He suffered for us - the indescribable agony of the cross and the crushing burden of carrying the sins of the whole world on His shoulders. Soon, Jesus will return to earth to close the curtain on suffering - forever. In today's Scripture, we read, "They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away." In the meantime, as we yield to Him in our brokenness, He authenticates our faith, refines it, and makes it strong.
Lord, You have never asked me to go where You haven't gone Yourself. If I find myself on a path of pain or sorrow, I can see Your footprints ahead of me. And I know where this path leads - to joy! Just around the bend, all of the suffering will be over forever - little more than a thin memory on a fresh, eternal morning. [A Spectacle of Glory by Joni Eareckson Tada and Larry Libby]
